54: G.R.I.T. (Guest: Syreeta Poindexter)

Our ears and minds may have been flooded with these words while growing up from our teachers, coaches, and parents. However, as we have headed down our unique paths into adulthood, grit and perseverance have taken a back seat to other modern-day buzzwords, such as intentional, growth hack, and pivot.  We wanted to focus on the power of grit and perseverance for any full-time black woman wondering if they have what it takes to not only dream but dare to take the risk of doing it. The pressure to accomplish a great feat each and every day is not realistic. The true currency of any journey is the many steps taken to reach your goal. The pain and uncertainty will either make or break you. We wanted to speak to a superhero today to show you all that you too can make it to your own destination land one day. The power of grit and perseverance are real. Syreeta DeFrance-Poindexter is an Attorney who works within the Complex Litigation Department of a law firm based in Ohio. She has been a member of the opioid team which played a key role in recent opioid litigations. Before going to law school, Syreeta worked as a Case Manager for a corrections association. While working at the corrections association, Syreeta noticed first-hand the disparities that residents faced due to not having proper legal representation. Witnessing the disparities motivated her to pursue her Juris Doctor(JD). Syreeta graduated Cum Laude in the top 20% of her graduating class from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and was subsequently admitted to the Ohio State Bar. Syreeta loves to cook and she loves to spend her free time traveling with her two sons and her husband.
