55. Keeping Your Cool…Habits That Help!

from The Habit Thrive Podcast ~ Self Care Habits, Mindfulness & Wellness Routines for Women 50 & Beyond · host Lorrie Mickelson, Habits & Self Care

Ah, the sunny, summer month of July...☀️ The hot, humid, sticky summer month of July.🥵 For many of us, the increased heat and humidity experienced this time of year can really affect our bodies and our moods and sometimes even put a damper on activities we normally enjoy. It’s not uncommon to feel the heat through: Increased inflammation Skin conditions Migraines Acid reflux/indigestion Bowel changes Irritability But, despite all this, you can still feel fabulous in July! And today on Episode #55 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we are exploring the art of Keeping Your Cool…Habits That Help! One of the simplest ways we can help keep our physical bodies cool is by staying inside during the hottest, sunniest parts of the day. Do you normally like to take a walk after lunch? Try going before breakfast or after dinner instead. Do you like to spend a lot of time in your garden? Experiment with plants that can grow in shaded planters on a covered patio. And if you do have to be outside in the sweltering temperatures, try some adjustments that can help you keep your cool: Have plenty of water on hand Wear sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats Rent a cart instead of walking your round of golf Another way to keep physically cool is to choose the right type of clothing for the weather. Tight, binding clothing can often make us feel suffocated or overheated. Opt instead for lighter, flowing materials that allow a cool breeze every now and then.😎 You can also cool your mind by bringing in some calming activities we have talked about before. One way is through breathing exercises. A great way to cool down through breathing is by using left nostril breathing. Just a few sets of breaths can bring your mind back down to a more calm state and in turn have a cooling effect on your mental and emotional being. We can also keep our cool mentally by using our planners and journals. When we map out our activities and events for the day or week, it helps us not to feel rushed and overheated because we know what’s coming and that we have control. And in the times that we may feel like we lost control or things didn’t actually go quite as planned, a good brain dump in our journal can be a great way to reset and cool down. So let’s chill together today and start implementing those habits to keep our cool.😁 Lorrie  xoxox Mentioned in this podcast: I would be so grateful if you would take a minute and provide some feedback on this podcast.
