55. Palm Springs Reparations Case w/ Attorney Areva Martin

from The Legal Lens Podcast · host Angela Reddock-Wright

𝑨 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒔 ... 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓. This is how my guest for this week’s Legal Lens show describes the Section 14 area of Palm Springs, CA. This was once a thriving community until a series of forced removals by the City of Palm Springs in the 1950s - 1960s, which took place with little or no notice, and sometimes destroyed houses with personal belongings inside. The Section 14 area of Palm Springs is a one-mile stretch of desert east of downtown Palm Springs, owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, now home to the tribe’s namesake hot spring, which is central to the tribe's traditional life and attracted the desert’s first wellness resorts in the 1880s. Today, the land holds a sprawling casino, hotels, condos and the Palm Springs Convention Center. My KBLA TALK 1580 fellow host and Civil Rights Attorney Areva Martin represents a number of Black and Latino former residents as they seek city reparations and she joined me in the KBLA TALK 1580 studio to help us better understand the history, the context and legal implications of the case.
