Er wurde mit zahlreichen renommierten Kultur- und Literaturpreisen ausgezeichnet. 2015 erhielt er den Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels. Bei der Wahl des deutschen Bundespräsidenten 2010 gehörte Kermani auf Vorschlag der hessischen Grünen der 14. Bundesversammlung an. Am 23. Mai 2014 hielt Navid Kermani die vielbeachtete Festrede anlässlich der Feierstunde des Deutschen Bundestags zum 65. Jahrestag des Grundgesetzes. Für die Wahl des deutschen Bundespräsidenten 2017 wurde er als möglicher Kandidat ins Gespräch gebracht.
