Ze gingen soms al voor hun vijftiende naar zee, de matrozen, machinisten, vissers die nu met pensioen zijn. En de landrotten die hun dagen op de vaste wal hebben gesleten kunnen zich maar moeilijk voorstellen hoe het voor hun generatiegenoten was om altijd maar op zee te zijn. In Naar Zee kijken zeevarenden terug op hun werkende leven: het zijn verhalen van jonge, vaak rebelse jongens die het vertrouwde leven achter zich lieten zonder precies te weten waar ze in terecht zouden komen; kleine drijvende gemeenschappen, strikte discipline, verre havens, ruzies en vriendschap, stormen en schipbreuk, orde, regelmaat, doodsangst en verveling.
