58. In the name of God: Corrie ten Boom (anti-Nazi) & the Nuns in Black (anti-nuclear war)

from Pink Collar: A True Crime Podcast · host Pink Collar Pod

This week we revisit one of our favorite themes, GOOD CRIMES!! Rachel starts off with the story of the author of the best-selling novel, The Hiding Place. Corrie ten Boom and her family lived in the Netherlands during World War II. Her family were Calvinist Christians in the Dutch Reformed Church and because of their faith they believed all people were created equal. After the Germans invaded the Netherlands, Corrie and her family stepped up to create a safe space for Jewish people. Her and her sister, Betsie, worked with an architect to build a fake wall to hide up to 6 people in their home. After an informant tipped off the police, Corrie, Betsie, and her father were arrested by the German police. Next, Nathalie tells the story of Dominican Sisters Ardeth Platte, Carol Gilbert, and Jackie Hudson. They started off as Catholic school teachers but shifted their focus to protesting nuclear weapons. These BA nuns cut through the gate of an area harbording nuclear missile silos. They wore white hazmat suits that read, “Disarmament Specialists” and, “Citizens’ Weapons Inspectors Team”. While there, they hung a peace banner and poured a cross of blood on a lid covering a missle silo. In total, the women spent approximately 15 years total in 40 jails and prisons.  Rachel’s Sources  https://www.annefrank.org/en/anne-frank/go-in-depth/german-invasion-netherlands/  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrie_ten_Boom  https://virtualtour.corrietenboom.com  https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/corrie-ten-boom  https://www.biography.com/activist/corrie-ten-boom Nathalie’s Sources https://www.globalsistersreport.org/news/people/religious-life/news/two-dominican-sisters-master-class-why-bomb-bad http://natcath.org/NCR_Online/archives2/2003c/081503/081503g.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Hudson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardeth_Platte https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Gilbert
