58: Why Cueing Is The Most Important Skill of Teaching

from Yoga Teacher Training Podcast: Learn Anatomy, Philosophy, Business and More · host Jeremy Devens

Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence Nearly all yoga teaching is happening online right now. Teaching online creates a lot of unique challenges: You can't use physical assists. You can't always see your students clearly. Students need to hear each word you say clearly You can't go over to talk to students 1-1 Every word you say matters more than ever Cueing is the most important skill for yoga teachers to develop, especially if you're teaching online, and this workshop will address all of these needs. With these skills you can build a thriving online yoga community and livelihood. In the book "The One Thing" they ask the question "What's the One Thing I can do / such that by doing it / everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" - in teaching yoga I believe the one thing you can focus on that makes everything significantly better is cueing. A new student coming to your class can know within minutes wether you they would come back or not. They know because of your cues. An experienced student will keep coming back because your cues add insight and depth to their practice. As a teacher, nearly every word you say from the beginning to the end of class is a cue that is either clear or unclear. Clarifying or confusing. So how do we define what a cue is? Have you noticed there are different types of cues? What are some examples of effective vs ineffective cues? I'll share in today's episode.
