Colon cancer is the most common type of gastrointestinal cancer and rates of diagnosis have nearly doubled in people under the age of 55. Because of this rise, in 2021 the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued the recommendation that the screening age for colonoscopies be lowered to 45 for those at an average risk for developing colorectal cancer.
