from Maplewood Baptist Church | Martinsburg, WV
In this message from Matthew 5:13-16, we are reminded that every believer has been called to be a light in a dark world. Jesus declared, “Ye are the light of the world,” teaching that the Christian life is meant to visibly reflect His presence and truth to those around us.This sermon explores the biblical picture of the believer as a lamp. The light we possess is not our own—it is the borrowed light of Jesus Christ shining through a surrendered life empowered by the Holy Spirit.Using the illustration of an ancient oil lamp, we discover several important truths:• The clay vessel represents the believer’s body and mind, which belong to God and are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. • The oil represents the Holy Spirit, without whom there is no spiritual life. • The wick represents the human spirit, which must be continually cleansed and trimmed by the Word of God. • The flame represents the life of Jesus Christ shining through the believer. The message emphasizes that salvation is the work of God alone. No church, preacher, teacher, or religious ceremony can save a soul. Only Jesus Christ can bring light into a heart darkened by sin.As believers, we are called to shine both privately and publicly. Our testimony should be evident in our homes, among our families, in our workplaces, and throughout our communities. A public testimony means little if there is no light in the home, and a faithful witness in daily life can have a far-reaching impact for Christ. This sermon also highlights three important functions of spiritual light:• Light dispels darkness by bringing truth where there is confusion and sin. • Light discovers darkness by exposing what is hidden and revealing the need for repentance. • Light determines direction by helping believers walk in God’s will and providing guidance to others. At the same time, Jesus warned that light can be hidden. Some believers hide their light beneath the bushel of busyness, allowing careers, responsibilities, and distractions to crowd out their spiritual influence. Others hide their light beneath the bed of laziness, failing to serve and engage in the work God has given them to do.The challenge of this message is simple but powerful: let the life of Christ shine through you. The goal of the Christian life is not to draw attention to ourselves, but to point others to God so that He receives the glory. In a world growing darker by the day, God still desires His people to be shining lights. The question each believer must answer is: Is your little light still shining?Key Scriptures: Matthew 5:13-16, 2 Corinthians 4:6, Psalm 18:28, John 15:3, John 8:12, Ephesians 5:13, Philippians 2:15
