6. Knowing Him - Cleanse

from Mitchell Berean Church - Podcast · host Ben Phillips

When Jesus walked into the temple in John 2, He came for worship, but instead He has to confront what had taken over. Tables were flipped, money scattered, and Jesus declared, “Stop turning my Father’s house into a market.”His anger wasn’t about chaos—it was about something sacred being crowded out. And when they demanded proof of His authority, Jesus pointed beyond the building and straight to Himself. The real temple was standing in front of them. Here’s the uncomfortable question for us: when was the last time you cleaned something because it actually needed it—not because someone was coming over? Sometimes the place that needs cleansing first is the church—not the building, but the body. Over time, good things can become untouchable things. Preferences turn into sacred cows. Ministries stay because “that’s how we’ve always done it.” Comfort starts to matter more than mission. And at the same time, we quietly learn to tolerate what Scripture tells us not to—gossip, slander, hidden addictions, sexual sin, and spiritual compromise. Paul reminds us that a little yeast changes the whole batch. What we allow to remain eventually shapes who we become. But Jesus doesn’t stop with His church—He comes for your home and your heart. Scripture says you are the temple of the Holy Spirit. So the real question is not whether Jesus cares about holiness—it’s whether we do. Are there rooms in your life you keep closed to Him? Habits you manage instead of confess? Sin you explain instead of expose? You were bought at a price. And the same Jesus who once cleansed the temple still has zeal today to cleanse whatever no longer belongs in a house that carries His name. - Pastor Ben Key Verse - John 2:17 (NIV) - "His disciples remembered that it is written: 'Zeal for your house will consume me.'"
