Redemption is a term used in reference to the purchase of a slave's freedom. If we are honest, we will admit that as humans we are slaves to sin. If "the wages of sin is death" then we need someone to rescue us. Jesus came for the very specific reason of taking our sin upon himself and paying the penalty we owe by dying on the cross. Jesus paid the ransom price. That is redemption.
