#6 Trauma Screaming Back At Us

from Trauma Tips · host Rosalien Stagg

We talked a bit in another episode about trauma and our responses to it. Today we are going deeper into how trauma can potentially scream back at us. We all react to trauma in different ways, experiencing a wide range of physical and emotional reactions. Traumatic events are shocking and emotionally overwhelming and the events vary considerably, ranging from a relatively mild reaction, creating minor disruptions, to severe and debilitating life challenges. Our body is made for handling traumas via our sympathetic autonomic nervous system, which in normal circumstances, controls our heartbeat, digestion, thought processes, emotions etc. When danger appears, it quickly goes into action and kicks into survival mode. When our bodies stay in danger our systems struggle to go back into balance. There is research that shows a correlation between digestive disorders and being stuck in trauma. When we are in fight and flight 80% of our blood goes to the arms and legs, not to the digestive system. This suggests that if we are stuck in trauma for any length of time, the amount of blood needed for proper digestion is not flowing to the digestive system. As a result, we may not be able to digest foods properly. A sluggish digestive system and slower metabolism could start hindering all organs in the body as we may not be getting the proper nutrients needed for the whole body to function properly. While traumatic events can happen to anyone, you’re more likely to be traumatized by an event if you’re already under a heavy stress load, have recently suffered a series of losses, or have been traumatized before, especially if the earlier trauma occurred in childhood. Understanding the body’s response can be a powerful first step toward healing from trauma. Get curious as to why your body may be struggling and how your body may be responding or reacting to negative energy in motion. A while back, I took on a client who looked completely put together. She had recently completed a Masters Degree and graduated top of her class. She was part owner in a successful business and had previously run multiple other businesses. But behind her physical appearance and accomplishments, she was physically exhausted and emotionally depleted. This was first made apparent when we started talking about her dietary restrictions. She could not have any gluten or dairy products because she was intolerant. She also requested that her room and anyone in contact with her be scent free as she struggled with chemical sensitivity. (there’s another heads up). When she arrived, she asked me to carry her bags into her suite. She had had many surgeries to combat extensive bone damage and had ill use of her arms. I knew this seemingly put-together woman must have a big backstory. During our sessions, she revealed parts of her past. Turns out her body couldn’t handle the trauma and stress any longer.....
