In Hinduism and Buddhism, nirvana is the highest state that someone can attain, a state of enlightenment, meaning a person's individual desires and suffering go away. What does Nirvana mean in Judaism? How is it obtained in Judaism? What are the fundamental differences between Nirvanas as it exists in Judaism from as it exists in Hinduism and Buddhism? Well for starters, The Hindu belief in a G-d, or in many G-ds, is a complicated issue, and not one that we will discuss here. However, in Judaism, in which there is one G-d, and even deeper yet, in which monotheism does not just define that there is only one G-d, but that ultimately, everything is G-d and G-d is everything, Nirvana means to have an absolute transparency and oneness with G-d. The entire negation of self is the negation of any identity or ego, other than being part-and-parcel of, “G-d is everything and everything is G-d.” In Judaism, it is only here where the, “nor sense of self,” of Nirvana is found. Another fundament of Nirvana in Judaism, is that rather than being of abnegation and isolation, it drives for engagement. Nirvana in Judaism is to find G-d, and our oneness with G-d, in our physical engagement, in our mundane activities of life, as well, and not only in our spirituality, meditation, concentration and prayers. This lecture is based primarily on a maamor the Rebbe delivered on this Shabbat, in 1969, exploring the mystical teachings concerning G-d, His name, and the Jewish people being, One, Alone, and One and Alone.
