60 Nix on East Asian Shamanism and questions about questions
from Integrated Awakenings with Maria
In this new podcast episode we have as our guest, Nix, a practicing korean folk-shaman and anthropologist sitting us down and easefully combing for us the core differences in thinking around western and eastern mystical-spiritual practices. We have a holistic discussion on how western philosophy may relate to things via pictures (the snapshot of a situation - eg: a tarot spread) versus the dynamic and relational philosophy of taoist-confuscian-shamanic iching reading of the same situation. ( a moving picture, eg: fengshui, an iching cast). In this episode she also shares some of her unique practices, as someone who has grown up in the Philippines and is also a considered a “feminine” practitioner of “masculine” disciplines/texts, AS WELL AS other significant practices such as exorcisms, numerology, dream interpretation and modernizations of these practices and more. If you’ve ever felt confused by traditional chinese medicine, want to reconnect to the energies and general philosophies that are the bedrock of east asian mysticism and medicine then this is a great place to start! (A good grasp of western tarot though would be best) I can also vouch that nix emits such a grounded and clear state of being that was such a joy to be able to share with the rest of the audience. Please enjoy!PS: this is in taglish, also we talk slightly fast with dense info so feel free to pause very generously Covers:Intro, backgrounder on Nix’ experiencekorean shamanism is more traditional since neo-confucianism didnt happen in korea (too strict about gender roles instead of it being symbolic)collective > individual, re-balancing a system/body harmoniouslyrelational eastern astrology vs western astrology4 elements vs 5 phases (even vs odd, static vs changing) western one life and swift results vs reincarnation (eg: bonsai)stills/snapshots vs a moviehow the elements are different between systems emotions with regards to organs and temperaturespleen, horror and ancestors, indian and sanskrit influencesdiabetes viewed in west vs eastdreamwork, special dreams, kitsune etcattracting spirits and ancestor worship, animal associationssigil craft, warnings against cults, eternal change, syncretismquestions > comfortable answers, numerology and punscollective reading (with a demo constructive and destructive spread)not! final thoughts——If you have specific questions for nix/want to reach out please do message maria and we’ll let her know!
