60. When Marxism Met Islamism: How Soviet Propaganda and Jihad Built a Global Anti-Israel Movement

from Middle East In Less Than Five Minutes · host IgalSc | Middle East , Israel, and Antisemitism Insights

In this episode of Middle East In Less Than Five Minutes — part two of the series From Marx to Hamas: How Ideas Became Weapons — we examine what happened when godless Marxist theory fused with jihadist Islamism, and how the Soviet Union served as the matchmaker. On paper, Marxism and Islamism should be sworn enemies. One is godless and materialist. The other is deeply religious and theocratic. Marx called religion the opium of the people. Islamists call religion the sword of the people. But politics makes strange bedfellows — and what they found was that shared hatred overcomes everything. Their shared target was the West, America, and Israel. To Islamists, Israel was the infidel foothold in Muslim lands. To Marxists, Israel was the forward base of American imperialism. Same enemy. Different theology. Enough for an alliance. The Soviet Union poured resources into this fusion in the 1960s and 70s, training and arming the PLO, coaching Yasser Arafat, and flooding the world with propaganda equating Zionism with apartheid and racism. The PLO adopted Marxist imagery — military fatigues, red stars, Kalashnikov posters — while Hamas added Quranic verses on top of the Marxist slogans. The result was jihadist ideology dressed in the costume of secular revolutionary struggle. Suicide bombers became freedom fighters. Bus bombings became armed resistance. And the murdered Jews disappeared.Topics in this episode include:Why Marxism and Islamism should be ideological enemies — and why they allied anywayThe shared hatred of the West, America, and Israel as the foundation of the allianceThe Soviet Union's role in training and funding Yasser Arafat and the PLOHow KGB propaganda equating Zionism with apartheid and racism shaped global opinionThe PLO's adoption of Marxist imagery to rebrand jihadist ideologyHamas: Quranic verses layered on top of Marxist revolutionary languageHow "oppressor vs oppressed" became cover for mass murderWestern universities embracing the Marxist-Islamist framework without questionWhy October 7 was described as "decolonization" by Western academicsThe human cost hidden under the slogans: mothers, children, families erased by theoryThis episode argues that the fusion of Marxism and Islamism did not create a coherent ideology — it created a machine for laundering violence as justice. Islamists bring the blood. Marxists bring the moral cover. Together they sanitize murder, turn pogroms into politics, and call the result resistance.Follow Middle East In Less Than Five Minutes for short, sharp, fact-based episodes on antisemitism explained, Islamism, Soviet disinformation, media bias in the Middle East, Middle East history, Zionism history, Jewish history, Israel, and anti-Israel myths.#Islamism #Marxism #KGB #SovietDisinformation #Antisemitism #AntisemitismExplained #Hamas #PLO #MiddleEast #JewishHistory
