61: We See You WAT with Alaina Newell (Part 1 of 2)

from Artistic Finance · host Artistic Finance

A discussion on the finance related demands of We See You WAT, the movement calling for racial equality in American Theatre. In June 2020 they published a list of demands for making American Theatre more equitable. Theatre artist Alaina Newell joins us for the first of two episodes discussing each finance related demand. Some are free or inexpensive, which theatre companies of any size can accommodate. Others require a bit of money and are aimed at bigger theatre companies and commercial productions including Broadway.   Alaina Newell is a multi-hyphenate black, female, cisgender artist dabbling in acting, singing, directing, and writing. A recent BFA graduate, Alaina has taken her experiences from oppressive institutions and formed an artistic form of release. She created Fourth Wall, a podcast that brings on the players on both sides of the industry to investigate discrimination and bias in the theatre.   We See You WAT: https://www.weseeyouwat.com/   List of Demands (29 page document): https://www.weseeyouwat.com/demands   List of Demands Related To Money (list by AF): https://www.artisticfinance.com/episode/CVO8NDKdbdnemQajgTCF/We-See-You-WAT-with-Alaina-Newell-Part-1-of-2   Alaina's Instagram - @alainanewell: https://www.instagram.com/alainanewell/   Fourth Wall - Alaina's Podcast: https://anchor.fm/fourthwall   Lift The Curtain - End Unpaid Arts Internships: https://www.facebook.com/Lift.The.Curtain.End.Unpaid/   Williamstown Apprentice Drama: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2021-07-20/williamstown-theatre-festival-sound-crew-walks-out   Stop Clause - Beetlejuice vs. Music Man and Scott Rudin: https://broadwaynews.com/2019/12/16/beetlejuice-brings-attention-to-broadways-stop-clause/#:~:text=The%20stop%20clause%20has%20been,leave%20its%20theater%20in%20June.   August Wilson:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Wilson   Anything Goes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anything_Goes   Choir Boy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choir_Boy   ...   Interview by Ethan Steimel   Support Artistic Finance by becoming a patron: www.patreon.com/artisticfinance   www.artisticfinance.com
