ב22 דצמבר 1984, ברנדר גטס עולה על קרון חצי ריק בברכבת התחתית במנהטן. בקרון ישנם ארבעה נערים, אחד מהם פונה אליו ומבקש 5 דולר. גטס, שנשדד בעבר, מוציא אקדח שהוא מחזיק ללא רישיון, ומרוקן את מחסנית חמשת הכדורים שלו, פוצע באופן חמור את ארבעתם, קוטע לאחד מהם את עמוד השדרה, ומשאיר אותו משותק לנצח. עקב אחוזי הפשיעה והרצח הגבוהיים מאי פעם, אשר יצרו מציאות של פחד ואימה, גטס הופך לגיבור, לסמל של אדם שעמד על המשמר ודואג זכויות האזרח הקטן.
