It’s hard to find an American frontiersman with greater skill than Kit Carson.   He left home as a young teen. By his early twenties, he was already a seasoned, well-known, mountain man. He spoke Ute, Shoshoni, Navajo, Apache, Comanche, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Paiute, as well as fluent in Spanish.   During the Mexican War, Carson famously snuck through enemy lines running 30 miles barefoot to get help. He earned a well-deserved reputation for calm bravery under fire.   Later, during the Civil War, Carson served as a Union officer in the New Mexico Territory, leading campaigns against hostile tribes to protect the civilian population.   At the Battle of Adobe Walls against a massive force of up to 3,000 Comanche and Kiowa warriors, Carson, with only 400 men, was able to repel the enemy and conduct a strategic retreat saving nearly all his men from what most thought would be a certain massacre.   Kit Carson remains a controversial American hero.
