L’environnement hostile créé par le racisme systémique produit une souffrance invisible, niée et souvent incomprise : l’impact psychologique. Au-delà des discriminations physiques, verbales ou encore institutionnelles, la charge raciale pèse sur la santé mentale des personnes non-blanches. À force de subir des micro-agressions, d’ajuster leur comportement et leurs propos aux injonctions sociales, ou encore d’absorber les discours qui les désignent comme un problème national, les personnes racisées finissent par s’aliéner. Quels sont les dégâts psychologiques créés par la discrimination raciale au travail ou au sein d’un couple ? À quel point la négation d’appartenance nationale marque la construction identitaire des personnes racisées nées en France ? Quels effets les débats publics peuvent avoir sur la santé mentale des personnes qui s’y sentent conspuées, notamment sur les personnes perçues comme musulmanes ?Pour en discuter, Rokhaya Diallo et Grace Ly reçoivent Fatma Bouvet de la Maisonneuve, médecin psychiatre et autrice. Dans son ouvrage Une arabe en France (éd. Odile Jacob, 2017), elle raconte comment ses patient·es non-blanc·hes se retrouvent brisés par les préjugés raciaux. Selon elle, l’énergie dépensée par les personnes racisées pour se conformer à la francité les pousse dans un "no man’s land psychologique".
