The iron door slammed shut with a dull thud. The torchlight wavered as the Roman guards stepped back from the cell.   Inside, kneeling on cold stone was a man who was scourged, blood dripping from his torn back. Shackles bit into his wrists and ankles. He awaited the executioner’s heavy sword.   Issuing from the Emperor’s palace the “justice” of Rome—proud, powerful, pitiless—had determined the man’s fate before he could say a word in his own defense.   What’s worse, his crime was not treason, theft, or violence.   It was love.   The Latin name of the man Caesar was putting to death was Valenteenus.
