This week we’re exploring the book Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell. Montell has a linguistics degree and deep fascination with cults, and cultish groups, after growing up with her father stories on escaping the cult his step family brought him to as a child. In this book well known cults, like Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate (from Angela’s Dateline Special love) to newer Cultish like groups like MLM’s and group fitness classes (that Jae zero’s in on) are discussed at length, dissecting the language that draws people in to cults, and analyzes whether they are hurtful or harmful.
