The Engine of the Swing: Understanding Pelvic MotionMany golfers believe the pelvis simply rotates during the golf swing. Modern biomechanics tells a different story. The pelvis is the central link between the lower body and the torso, controlling balance, force transfer, and efficient club delivery. Great ball striking depends on dynamic three-dimensional movement, not on reaching a specific amount of hip rotation. The pelvis moves in seven ways throughout the swing: rotation, tilt, side bend, sway, thrust, lowering, and rising. Together, these movements create an efficient kinetic sequence.During the backswing, the pelvis naturally lowers as the hips, knees, and ankles flex. This athletic loading stores energy, improves balance, and prepares the body to generate powerful ground reaction forces.During the downswing, the pelvis changes from lowering to rising. The lead side rises as the lead leg extends, redirecting force upward through the body. This creates space for the arms and club to accelerate, increasing clubhead speed and improving impact stability.Efficient energy transfer follows the kinetic sequence:Ground → Feet → Ankles → Knees → Hips → Pelvis → Ribcage → Arms → ClubThe pelvis must accelerate and then brake at the correct moment so energy transfers efficiently to the upper body.A dynamic pelvis provides several advantages:Better balance and postureImproved pressure managementEffective muscle loadingGreater vertical force productionHigher clubhead speedMore consistent impactOne of the biggest mistakes is trying to keep the hips or knees completely still. Restricting pelvic motion limits mobility, increases stress on the lower back, and forces the arms to compensate. There is also no universal "perfect" amount of pelvic rotation. Efficient movement depends on individual anatomy, mobility, stance, strength, and swing style. Consistency is far more important than maximum range of motion.Instead of forcing positions, allow the pelvis to load during the backswing, shift and rotate during transition, brake to transfer energy, and rise through impact. True stability comes from controlling movement—not restricting it.A healthy pelvis is dynamic, coordinated, and responsive. Understanding how it loads, transitions, and extends will improve speed, consistency, and long-term performance. If you enjoyed this video, subscribe to the channel and explore the eCoach360° Golf Intelligence Platform, including the 48-hour free trial and our 30-Day Golf Biomechanics, Kinematics, Ground Reaction Forces & Club Kinematics Certification Program.
