#675 The "Stay in Posture" Myth: Why Pelvic Extension and Side Tilt are the Real Keys to Power and Back Health (Part 6)

Welcome to Part 6 of our 10-part Golf Biomechanics series. One of the biggest myths in golf is the advice to "stay in your posture." Modern 3D motion analysis from GEARS and AMM3D shows that elite golfers do the opposite. To generate maximum speed and protect the lower back, the pelvis must transition from flexion into extension during the downswing. At address, golfers typically have 20–23° of forward pelvic flexion. During the transition, this angle decreases as the pelvis extends, reaching almost zero flexion shortly after impact. At the same time, the lead hip rises significantly higher than the trail hip. This "Replacement Mechanism" allows players to maintain their inclination to the ball while extending safely and efficiently.Elite golfers also shift the pelvis about 4 inches (10 cm) toward the target before impact. This lateral shift loads the lead glute, improves stability, and allows the pelvis to rotate approximately 40° open without placing excessive stress on the lumbar spine.Golf follows a Proximal-to-Distal Sequence (PDS). The pelvis is the engine of the downswing, initiating movement in about 70% of professionals. Peak pelvic speed occurs roughly 87 ms before impact, followed by the thorax, arms, and club. This precise timing maximizes energy transfer and clubhead speed. One of the biggest coaching mistakes is trying to "keep your rear against the wall." Maintaining deep flexion during high-speed rotation limits glute activation, reduces power, and increases lower back stress. Humans rotate most efficiently from an extended position—not from excessive forward bend.A simple Doorframe Drill helps develop the correct movement. Hold a doorframe, load into the trail glute, shift laterally toward the target, then extend the pelvis while allowing the lead hip to rise. This creates the feeling of moving up and through the shot instead of staying down.Key Takeaways• Pelvic extension is essential for speed and back health.• Side tilt replaces forward bend at impact.• A 4-inch lateral shift improves rotation and glute activation.• The pelvis should start the downswing and reach peak speed first.Elite golfers do not stay in posture—they transition dynamically from flexion into extension. Mastering this movement improves power, consistency, and long-term spinal health while producing a faster, more efficient golf swing.www.eCoach360.com📺 The Explainer
