from Poised for Exit · host Julie Keyes

How Do You Make Uncomfortable Situations ComfortableThis episode of #PoisedforExit we featured Mike Gregory, who specializes in conflict resolution, using a method he calls  "The Collaboration Effect".  Mike is also a national speaker, instructor, consultant and professional Mediator, who has worked with families, communities and shareholders in resolving disputes of various types. Mike says neuroscience plays a big role in how we deal with conflict or run from it. When a person has control, predictability, and can show progress, the stress they experience is very low. When those qualities are not present, there's a great deal of stress, which can cause people to make decisions, say and do things they can't take back. When a business owner is having a dispute with a partner, how do you start a dialogue? What if one partner becomes angry beyond the ability to speak rationally? Mike says start the de-escalation process by speaking slowly. When we are feeling stressed or angry, sometimes we talk too fast and too loud. Speaking slowly gives us a chance to really think about what we need to say. Mike's book called "The Collaboration Effect" contains much more on this subject, including practical ways to communicate and work through conflict beyond this summary. Listen to the episode for more of Mike's expertise on conflict resolution.Find Mike at Michael Gregory Consulting and The Collaboration Effect, and find Mike's book here.
