#69 Stuttering Doctor Treats All with Joseph Cornett

from TranscendingX - Raw Conversations and Practical Tips to Break Through Stuttering, Communication Fears, and Become Who You Truly Are · host Transcending Stuttering with Uri Schneider

Joseph is finishing medical school this year at Columbia University in New York City and plans to begin a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He hopes to work in global health for people of all ages and in under-resourced settings, and especially with adolescents and invisible struggles. Joseph's experiences in healthcare and psychology include the Yale Child Study Center, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research (Australia), the Public Health Foundation of India, and Kijabe Hospital (Nairobi). He is an avid pianist-keyboardist and has found joy in leading and learning from such diverse music groups as the Broadway Haven Players and the Yale Gospel Choir. Joseph has had a stutter since the age of six, and his experience of stuttering has deepened his own development and identity in profound ways. Joseph hopes this audio format provides some personal insights and a feeling of solidarity with others whose stutters have impacted their own lives in unique and perhaps similar ways. 2:08  Intro & the Yes/And approach 4:20  Breadth and depth in life - finding balance 8:20  Speech therapy and Stuttering / ADHD journey 10:30  The role of music - experiencing confidence and nervousness 17:00  The vulnerability of being human and using difficult times to help others 20:00  "You sound like Obama."  Word choice and Pausing 24:05  Stuttering - moving from a social hurdle to a professional one, in a busy hospital setting 29:10  Being an advocate and using one's voice 32:00  Speech therapy journey 39:20  The goal of spontaneity 43:00  Learn how to take the plunge 45:25  It's the outcome that matters. 51:10  Be who you want to be and how you want to be.   Uri Schneider, M.A. CCC-SLP is co-founder and leader at Schneider Speech; creator and host of Transcending Stuttering; and faculty at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine.   Episode Notes: See more on our blog http://www.transcendingx/com/podcast http://www.schneiderspeech.com/ourblog     Podcast: "Transcending Stuttering with Uri Schneider" Listen anywhere you like...
