69. THE OUTWATERS (2023) dir. Robbie Banfitch

from The Movies · host Daniel Berrios

THE OUTWATERS is most easily described as 'sensory overload,' a found footage horror flick whose second half pummels with almost complete darkness, sans a single flashlight acting as an iris revealing fucked-up shit. The sound work shrieks, warbles, layers in multiple voices: a pulse-pounding array of noise that mimics what it's like to feel someone else's panic attacks. The movie starts as four friends venturing into the desert to make a music video, but when an unknown axed assailant attacks their campsite, the movie essentially explodes, sending filmmaker Robbie (Robbie Banfitch in one of those moves where the characters are named after the actors) into a naked odyssey through galactic? interdimensional? hell. This one ain't for the faint of heart nor stomach. It's also not for me, in the slightest.---Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdFinancially support the podcast via the tip jar!
