7. The Parables of Jesus - Hearing or Listening?

Have you ever been in a conversation and realized the other person was hearing you but not listening? Or maybe you had been hearing someone speak and then realized you couldn’t remember anything that they said? Welcome to human nature! It is our natural instinct to be bad listeners. In fact, while finishing my Masters degree I found an incredibly interesting study that detailed how almost all pastors said they were good listeners. Yet when their congregation was interviewed most pastors were discovered to be very poor listeners. They were quick to interrupt and quick to assume they had the right answers before carefully listening. Jesus did not need a psychological study to know this about human nature. In the parable of the sower we find that our bad listening skills often translate to Gods Word. This leads to deadly spiritual behavior.
