70% Fewer Animals Today

from News For Kids · host ICRT

Today, I want to talk about animal conservation, or saving animals. Why? Well, today is World Wildlife Conservation Day. Conservation means saving something. Water conservation means saving water. Energy conservation means saving energy. "Conservation" 就是節約,或是保育。我們可以節約用水,或是節約能源。 Did you know that there are fewer animals today than ever before? An organization called the World Wildlife Fund says there are 70% fewer animals today than in 1970! 70! That's terrible. Why is this happening? One reason is because people are cutting down lots of trees, especially in the Amazon. Animals that need the trees to live are in real trouble. Another problem is pollution, and climate change. Some animals have gone down even more than 70 percent. For example, the World Wildlife Fund talks about a type of gorilla from Brazil that's down by 80%! 80! The animals need our help! Soon, it could be too late… ________________________________ Vocabulary 保護樹木是保護動物的好辦法,可以讓很多種動物活下去。 1. water 水 Jane, you're wasting too much water. I'm brushing my teeth. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
