from The Movies · host Daniel Berrios
WOMEN TALKING is GREAT, the version applicable to "one of the greats." It works for the same reasons that 12 ANGRY MEN works: its variety and depth of character, razor-sharp dialogue, a flawless execution of form (editing, cinematography, blocking) and its fiercest commitment to gentle, honest discussion. This movie's about the aftermath of rape, the events that lead to its excusal. It's about the way we educate our children on gender as it relates to who's in charge. It's about how carefully we need to approach forgiveness, lest it be misconstrued as permission. (I stole that line from the movie, but fuck me, if that doesn't perfectly sum up the point.) After a series of assaults and rapes, three families of Mennonite women meet in a barn to debate whether all the women of their colony will stay to confront the men regarding their safety, or leave to start a new colony. These are their conversations, but I dare you not to recognize their relevance in yours. One of the greats. --------------------------- Review THE MOVIES on Apple Podcasts & I'll read it on the next episode!Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdFinancially support the podcast via the tip jar!
