732: On Passion, Purpose, and Knowing When to Pivot

One of the most common questions I’ve gotten over the years is, “Sara, how do I find my passion?” Often this question is followed by some lamenting over the fact that one has not yet found their passion. Sometimes society tells us that if we are not committing our life’s work to something we are passionate about, we are wasting our time or our talent. I would like to argue that sometimes it’s ok to do something you’re not 100% passionate about because it provides you security and stability (ie: a paycheck and benefits). AND, I get it…. Doing meaningful work that is aligned with your passions and gives you a sense of purpose is highly desirable. AND… the world needs your gifts! So, please don’t hold back from sharing them with us. SO, how do you know when to go after what you’re passionate about? How do you determine the thing you want to passionately pursue? How do you know when it’s the right time to pivot? Over the last 20 years, I’ve spent a lot of time building businesses around work that I’m deeply passionate about - work that gives me a massive sense of purpose. But there have also been moments (even seasons) where I have sat in pretty “MEH” situations in order to strategically plan my next pivot.
