This will NOT be what you’re used to when it comes to discussing religion and the church. Our guest, Pastor Jason Morriss, is breaking the mold when it comes to how to lead a congregation. Replacing the common fear-based style of preaching with an inclusive, expansive, and loving approach, he’s attracted an eclectic following of humans from all walks of life including those of various sexual preferences, races, and even creeds! He is highly accredited in his field, holding a Masters of Divinity from Northern Theological Seminary, and having worked in church leadership for several years. However, his liberal views caused turbulence along his path, underlined by his termination from the Free Methodist Church in 2016 due to his opposed views of total inclusion of the LGBTQ community. Now a lead pastor at Austin New Church, he relies on his entire congregation to inspire new ways of thinking and fresh ways of doing mission. As a post-evangelical, post-colonial, pro-feminist preacher he believes deeply in people and the brilliance they were born to bring to the world. His greatest joy as a pastor is helping people find theirs.In this episode we discuss what he believes the duty of the church is, how to navigate the ideas of heaven and hell from a progressive perspective, how the church will overcome the shameful treatment of the LGBTQ community and divorcees, and if he feels Jesus is the only way.
