79. Teacher Centered vs. Student Centered Focus

In this episode we talk about the difference between a student centered focus and a teacher centered focus in our educational world. A consistent theme we see in education is the difference between a teacher centered focus and a student centered focus. Teacher centered educators worry how everything relates too and affects them. Student centered educators worry about how everything relates too and affects the students they serve. One brings about an increase in student learning. One brings about bitterness and entitlement. Which camp do you reside in? Our educational world right now is in a difficult transition and one unfortunate thing I have seen is more teacher centered focus We obviously have to look out for ourselves and I believe that we need to make sure to address ourselves before our students, but where is our focus? Once we are at school and working to bring about student learning are we more focused on what each new idea is going to do to us or are we focusing on how to implement things to bring about what is best for our students? Is my decision best for me or best for my students? This doesn’t always have to be either/or, usually I would encourage us to think of this as an “And” opportunity. The choice is always yours how you want to approach this and we will always ebb and flow but student centered focus is always going to serve us better when it comes to whether our career feeds us or depletes us. Time to choose, what is it going to be?
