The following podcast contains spoilers, yes we're talking spoilers folks so listeners you've been warned if you don't want anything ruined about the newest movies I've just recently come out then maybe wait until you've seen it then come back. That being said, enjoy the show! Welcome back everyone to episode 8 of Armchair Reviews, my name is Chris and my name is James and today we are talking about Chris Reynolds newest flick done Kirk. Yeah, done Kirk, good movie.

Yeah it was not bad, this movie, obviously it's a little bit different change of pace for us, It's our newest release here in Yellowknife, so we didn't have too much options in what we're gonna see But we both wanted to see it beforehand. We had zero options Yes, literally this or two other movies that we've already reviewed but like you said we wanted to see it So we were excited that we got to do it. Yeah, this movie It's typically not one of those movies that I would have seen in theaters. I think least of all Yellowknife theater But I but for different reasons I would have seen it maybe for an iMacs Yeah, definitely cool and iMacs theater It was actually meant for it was shot in in iMacs cameras or something similar to iMacs sport for that for the effect Special effects special effects we don't got no special effects.

We barely have chairs No, our theaters fall into bits and pieces, but it means well It kind of does it mean well? I think so. It was alright Does it mean well when it's charging you a hundred dollars for a popcorn for one hundred dollars for cool popcorn? Yes, yeah, we need funding ASAP Get fucking famous players out here.

Yeah, please but enough about that. We uh talking Dunkirk here James Are you a history buff at all? So so hard no now I like my history, but I wasn't too aware of this battle I knew it was a battle in very important to the war. I knew it was early World War two more specifically was 1940 It was end of May of the beginning of June of 1940.

I did a little bit of research here regarding this battle and again I before going into it. I didn't look up anything I just kind of went to the movie to enjoy the movie itself. I didn't really know too much about the history of what happened there But after seeing the movie we did a little bit of research and you know it's it's pretty straightforward It's as it could be like you can get into the deeper reasons why certain things were done and stuff like that But essentially you have shit ton of soldiers stranded on on Dunkirk on more so the beaches of done And they're trapped from both sides of all the German the axis soldiers here, and it's mainly British French and Belgian They say there's about three hundred four hundred thousand British troops. Yeah, I think it's more like three to one British But to French yeah, and Belgian was kind of there just because they're so so close proximity to the French makes in And it's kind of controversial battle because they were they were like pigeonholed into this beach and and Hitler sanctioned the order for Famous halt order where where they stopped progressing the German stop progressing on the allied position to fully wipe them up because they're they got pretty cocky And they say they pretty much thought like oh they're fucked anyway, and it's just gonna be a matter of time before they finish So there's a three-day period That's kind of infamous for where no action was taken and that gave the British enough time to kind of get their shit together And you know and execute the evacuation with this huge evacuation and and not just the British Navy white don't the whole thing They could have just fucking just tanks they could blitzkrieg them pretty much like their infamous blitzkrieg Just gonna fucking just artillery naval or air and then and then get the soldiers going up there But they didn't pull back within hours easily yet, but so but they didn't and I got they gave it enough time for the British to To get the word out and they actually had little quote-unquote little ships Pretty much British civilian ships to come and help evacuate that had us If they did in real life, but in the movie anyways They had a nickname for like the call that they put it on the radio I'm drawn blank, but they refer to it other commander refers to it when he first gets to duck right I forget to Because one one like little boat rolls up and one of the other like ranking officers is kind of Yeah, yeah, more coming the reason why they had they knew these little ships because the the destroyers and also because destroyed Well, that's it but also because the the fuck what's that it's the tide the tide because it was so it was so shallow They need these smaller boats go otherwise they would all the bigger boats would have destroyed yeah Yeah, even where they have the one Is it a pure they call it they divide this movie the three timelines point of point of views the three sections So you have the mole which is much your jetty your higher your higher ground so you can get into these big ships for like dock essentially Yeah, and then you have the air Which is your your spitfire storyline and you have The seed yeah, but the mold is the air and then the sea was the little ships perspective from the British vessels Yeah, where we going with that?

Something about the mall we're talking about the mall and then they had to build another little one Oh, yeah, they actually yeah, so that was later on the movie They the engineers built like a side a side jetty for when the tide came in so they can travel across a ship so they can get On the little ship just right from the beach instead of having to go out on small so remember When the movie first started they kind of said it was a day's wait to line up on onto the mole and even then there's still Was a week's wait I think it was a week from the beach okay day on the actual mole Yeah, and then once you got on the destroyer was like an hour or whatever because they say you could just see England That's this I don't think you can actually physically see it, but it's essentially it's right there right there across the English channel you can see You can practically taste it. That's where these guys are so frantic to get home. Yeah, do I get you see it? But yeah, this movie is it's I think it builds well on like that.

It's just intense It's very it's just right from the very beginning you see it one of our main heroes from the mole the land series and he's a lesser No, I don't know what else is wrong I think his actor's name is Fiona Whitehead and in some of these trivia facts are read up Chris for Nolan wanted a bunch of Relative no one's for like the troops like the basic soldiers because that's what a lot of these guys on the beach were they were they were very In the experience early on the war. They didn't know what the fuck they were doing just kids Yeah, a lot of them just kids and you know what sometimes you just want to take a shit and you don't have time Yeah poor guy is literally just opening scene. Yeah, he's trying to take a shit Yeah, can't do it But he's getting fired at half as all of them literally except for him Yeah, and then he finally kind of escapes gets back over yes the beach He looks around and this is the parts it kind of took me out of it almost immediately But then it got back me got me back into it because you can see like the the shoreline apartment buildings are the buildings along it I'm like that seems like it's right on like in like California So they were like seem like updated versions buildings. Yeah, they did not look like 1940s buildings Yeah, I didn't know it like when he was actually being shot at no, but when he gets to the beach When he's on the beach in like the skyline.

Yeah, you just like it's like what kind of that doesn't look right Yeah, either way We get to see him and he meets up with a buddy who's burying his friend. I think he meets up He actually actually has a crossways But they stay together for the most of the movie actually pretty well And then you have the the air story who we have Tom Hardy and his two others defiers mainly just one other guy because the main Their main commander that he kind of gets shot down. He has shot down. Yeah, there's three of them So yeah, one gets one two three.

Yeah, yeah, and then it's just Tom Hardy and his blonde compadre and No name after these guys like they don't really mention their names or if they do it's only once and it's never it's not really like about The characters that it's not about character development. I should say it's just about the events about the events about the events About the events and that's that's just indicated in how it's shot itself How the movie is doled out because Chris are known like he wrote and directed this movie and there's not a lot of Exposition, there's barely any dialogue in it knows that a lot of dialogue and when there is it's like it I don't know if it's just cuz I can't pick up that the accent or anything like that But but some of this stuff is hard to fucking understand because between the dialogue the music and all the fucking sound effects of the guns And stuff going off you really can't understand what the fuck's going on and I want to believe that's on purpose It's I think it's definitely on purpose because they want you to feel kind of like your part of the war, right? Yeah, that's why I kind of said when we left the movie I was like you almost get uncomfortable feeling while you're watching it because of like the background music and the gunfire is so loud And then like everything that's happening on the screen a part of the war is really like ugly like it's grimy It's it's actually it's really real. I thought it actually could be a little bit real I thought it could be a little bit more grimy like a la saving private Ryan like they didn't it wasn't graphic Yeah, it was a graphic no, but it still had that intensity that belongs to war You know like in like the hull of a ship or something, you know It's getting attacked by a u-boat for example, you know the ships are going down like it had that visceral feeling of war But it didn't have like the Or which which it helps this movie I think and What I think the blood and gore is kind of worse in a movie like saving private Ryan where there is actually character development You're attached to the guys and you know This was the legs kind of ripped off and stuff you got damn yeah I was trying to do something else but I'm pretty glad I'm on the edge of your seat the whole time Because you think you start off like guys are gonna shot at and then he's on the beach And it's dropping bombs on a beach and then you're in the boat and it gets hit by fucking torpedo and then you know We know fighting is going on and it's just non-stop.

It just never lets up. We love it down your throat They really do you mention that there was an I'max and and we were in a young guy's he said but it it was loud It's fuck like that's the loudest I've ever been I think I've experienced in the only theater capital It was so fucking loud and I only can only imagine how loud those machine guns and all that kind of shit was in an I'max Theater that would have scared the shit out of me because that it was so loud. It's jarring almost I think that like we said it's on purpose 100% on purpose and it mixes with that music where it's again Hun Zimmer teaming up with Chris Rinalen. He builds that that music up where it's just constantly just fucking getting after you It's a it's a not easy tone like we started off the podcast like making ticking noises the grand if we didn't do a very good job But for the majority of the movie Loud tick the whole times every single time something's coming up to intense moment Exactly it's all only here that in the background and it's I couldn't help the think of 1990s Robin Williams book with like Captain Hook and earlier is tick tick tick tick tick tickicted tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick vulnerability That but it gets too.

Oh It just bugs you it just bugs ya and it's meant to bug you. It is meant to bug you yeah at the same time It was like gonna be a little lesson that take it off a little bit Just you know, but it's a minor complaint and otherwise. Have been into yeah We mentioned and we have here Oh yeah, so we said there's three storylines, right? So you have the land scene air.

For the mole, you have guys that are just trying to escape the beach, and they're pretty much climbing over each other to escape, and ships are getting sunk in the harbor, and at the mole, the sea. You have a British civilian group of two younger lads, and an older gentleman who has a son in the RAF who was killed actually early on the war. They learn about it near the end, yeah. He's going towards, he's trying to fight the good fight as a civilian, and the air you have Tom Hardy and his other bloke, trying to protect the ships that are being bombed by the German Luftwaffe.

And I'm not going to laugh at him. I'm not flying. And it's not a typical, obviously going into it. It's Christopher Nolan.

You have to kind of, unless it's a bad-in movie, you have to kind of expect. There's going to be a different type of storytelling with it. It's not just going to be linear. If anyone's seen Memento or Interstellar for that point, there's going to be a different type of angle being going on here.

And that's what they do again in this movie. It jumps all over the place. But I like how it does that, because it keeps you interested. It keeps you like, it's not like there's a movie called Vantage Point, like in 2008, back in the day, like Vantage Quayton, or something like that.

They just keep you playing the same story over and over and over. But from a different perspective. And that sucked at fucking hate that movie. That was definitely annoying.

And you expect it to be a unique perspective every time. But it's not way overlapping way too much. But this, it's really good. It's shot so well.

Symmatography is really good. And it's shot so well that you don't notice it until you start thinking about it. And that's like, oh, I noticed that. OK, so that's what you're doing.

And like as soon as you think you're like boom, back submerged into the movie. And at the end, it all gets brought together. It doesn't get brought together at the end. But kind of piece by piece, it's being brought together.

And then when it finishes up, it's really well done. It's not a mess. No, no, no, no. And some people, I read a little bit of things here and there that people were kind of fucking buttered about it.

But I think it's all done on purpose. Just like the music, just like the sound effects. It's iconic. I don't want to, I don't know, the best word is you're uneasy.

And it keeps you focused. But you're still kind of thinking about it, thinking what's happening next, what's, you know, like it's. It gives you an uneasy feeling. The whole time you're there.

And that's the whole point of it is what he's trying to say. And he wants to do the battle itself. It's not really even a battle because you only see Germans on screen maybe towards the end with Tom Hardy. You don't really see them when they're shooting at the guys at the start of the week.

You don't see them anywhere. Yeah, like the pilots, like the planes, not even the pilots. You see the planes when they're dog fighting and whatnot when they're dropping the bombs on the mole. Yeah, then at the end, you see them for a second.

But that's it. I think the tagline for this was in survival is victory. And that's what this movie is about. It's a survival story.

It's a war movie, but it's about survival. It's just doing what you can to survive. It's not about a battle. There's no battle for say.

There's action and elements to it. Yeah, there's war happening. But there's it's about getting all those soldiers home safe, as safe as possible, and alive as possible. And again, they show you all the real threats that these guys face on a day-to-day basis, fucking an hour-to-hour basis.

You know what I mean? Like I said, it's nonstop. It's just shove down your throat. You've obviously never experienced war.

But God damn. God damn. I'm good. I don't even sign up.

Fuck the crap out of there. That's insane. Especially then, too, like, oh shit. Sun nerd racking.

And yeah, so you have all the demons of the air. The demons of the land. And one of the scenes I like to when they're all cramped in the bottom of the hull of the beach. No, the beach boat.

And the drums are taking like, pot shots of it. Bing, bing. And you just see the shots coming in. They don't know what's happening.

They're shooting at it for fuck. For fun. Yeah. And they're plugging it, plugging it, plugging it.

And that guy gets shot. The war is like a ricochet. Because he got shot. It's like he gets hit by the eye, right?

Like he's holding his eye. He's like, they're like kind of busts out and it's like ricochet in his face. But I really like that scene. I like the dog fights in this were really cool.

The dog fights were so awesome. That was one of my favorite parts. And it's where the dog fights. I felt like I'm not an ace pilot.

I don't know if you know what I'm saying. I'm not an ace pilot. I did not know that. I can't fly Spitfire.

It's weird. I know. I feel like a pilot. I feel like a pilot.

I feel like sometimes some of the scenes where Tom Hardy is firing and I'm like, no, no, no. You need to lead the target. Lead the target. You're shooting too late.

Yeah. And that's the thing. Zero technology back then. Like obviously compared to what we have now.

Back then cutting edge stuff, right? But I always thought he was firing too late. I was like, no, no, no. I did this in a video game, dude.

You just got it. But, hey, where he's going to be. He still was the only one that I still. The most bad ass guy.

The only one that shot down every single plane. Even when he's gliding. He's just out of the car. Half an hour.

That's part of the air story line. Do a dive bomb. In the very first little battle between the Spitfires and the fucking loop off or whatever, something happens with his fuel gauge. Yeah, he's a good shot at, right?

Yeah. And then one of the bullets on the other plane kind of destroys his fuel gauge. Yeah. So he's kind of talking, communicating with his other pilot, but he's a long guy.

And he just his readings off his budget. He's like, oh, we took off at the same time. We're flying the same way. But two gallon differential between them.

Yeah. He's running down the no. It's like a white. And time.

He's doing the calculations by flying. Which is cool. It's a normal thing. Pilot still do it.

I mentioned this to you. There was a meme I saw on the interwebs with saying it was a three-picture thing with Tom Hardy in this movie with his flight mask in Dark Knight Rises with his Bane mask. His Bane mask. And then Mad Max with his metal mask on the front of a face.

Well, he's got a really nice coat. And it's like Tom Hardy can outact half his coworkers with just his eyes. And I thought it was so funny because it's true. Like, you can't fucking understand him in this movie at all.

And he's wearing that flight mask. Because he's got his actual accent. Oh, I'm stopping. I'm not even that.

I can't understand. It's even worse. Like, people thought you couldn't understand him with the Bane mask. This, you really have to fucking strain your ears to understand what he's saying.

I didn't think he was like that. I didn't like it. I didn't like it. I can understand him if you're just talking normally.

But with this, I couldn't understand it. But if you just fucking talk normally, he wouldn't be in a fucking spitfire in the middle of a fucking dogfight. You know what I mean? Part of it is that fucking screaming loud noises are the planes.

Yeah. They got fire. They're ticking. Yeah.

I'm just going to scream outside. That's pretty funny. And he's actually talking into a fucking radio which covers his mouth like I mean. It's not going to be clear and concise.

He does have a microphone and a fucking foot in front of him. Honestly, you could figure out this movie without any dialogue. You're really good. If you can't.

Let's see. What else would we have here? I mean, this is probably going to be a short episode. We got one thing.

One direction. One direction here. Yeah, one direction here. Harry Styles.

He makes his, what does it say? Don't they do, I think. Dave, you. And I'm not like a one direction fan or anything, but like, he's okay.

He's actually pretty decent for what he does. Like we said, there's no real main character, so there's not really any big roles. But I mean, he's got, you know, a fair amount of screen time for everybody's in. He's pretty good.

He's got a few lines. I have no complaints about him. He obviously gets emotional. I mean, they're in a fucking war.

Everyone's emotional. And he, yeah, they kind of, and that one scene I mentioned earlier when they're taking the potshots and all the both are. They kind of do this mutiny type thing where like they're kind of thinking about. Yeah, the one guy hasn't spoken.

He kind of thinks he's. Oh, yeah. He's a crowd. Yeah, he's a different.

Speaking of French voice, speaking English, but he's like, hey. They have that good, that good, like, he's not one of us fucking. He's speaking of us. Let's go.

And then your next goes. It's just, it's just the fear of war. That's all it is. And that's pretty good.

Harry's just being a dick. He's kind of being a dick at the same time. He's trying to survive. He's not like, even one of the scenes where the silly Murphy, he's in this as well, again with Chris Rinalen again for what, I don't know, I think it's a seven time with him.

His shoulder gets picked up by the, like, one of the main little ship there with the British civilians. And his, he's fucked. He's the guy, the first guy on the boat. Yeah, he is just absolutely fucked.

He's quote unquote shell shock. Between now and now is PTSD. Yeah. And he just flips the fuck out.

He actually ends up like pushing one of the little, the kids down and it's head. So the dad, son, and then a friend, I guess. Sorry. He's kind of leaves with him.

And they're just there. He's just trying to care for this guy. Yeah. And he flips out.

He's not wanting to go back to Dunker. Yeah. And you want to hate him for freaking out and pushing this kid and having this happen to the kid, but you understand. Right after he pushes the kid, he's like, you can tell he's really fucked with that one.

He's snapped back and he's like, oh shit, I should have done that. But he's trying to keep checking on the kid. And it was a nice moment where the one kid blondie with the sweater. Yeah, the son.

He wants to, again, he wants to hate that soldier. But then even at the end, when you find out the kid is, Georgie. Georgie is a kid who gets pushed down the stairs. Once you figure that he has died, and when the other soldier is starting on the boat after when the ships go down, he, uh, silly Murphy asks blondie kid, he says, how is he going to make it?

And he has that moment where he's like, fuck you, you killed him. Yeah. He understands. Yeah, he understands.

Like, no, no, he's really fine. He'll be fine. And even he has that, he looks over at the dad and he kind of gives him a little head like, you did well. Like, I understand.

Like, it was an understanding, acknowledgement that you said. That was really nice. And all you want to do is just want, you want to beat the shit. I push that guy off the boat and just club him over the face.

But it's like fuck, like what do you do? You've seen what he has partially experienced because you're rescuing these guys, right? You can understand it. And it's just so fucking like that's cool.

You know nothing about this guy and they don't even show this guy in any kind of battle. And you're like, God damn, he's been through a lot. Yeah, he's just fucked. Yeah, you're doing it.

Another thing I noticed. That's intense. Side steps because we're talking about Harry Salzner and everything. But like, a lot of these characters, I don't know if you know this, but they have really great hair.

Oh, everyone has perfect hair. Anyone has perfect hair. Like shit, man. God damn.

Like I think the main character you can tell he's British because his teeth need some more. Jesus. But all their haircuts? Phenomenal.

Like even if they're messy as fuck. Phenomenal. Which is fine, you know, these guys are all, you know, you know, decent looking guys because they're in a war and they're pissing on, but God damn, they're still like shit. Oh, God damn, get some braces.

It's a line, man. It's a line. Get those lips closed. I don't know how much.

It's a Christmas movie. This is pretty good. Can we get a fact check on the budget? That's cool.

A special fix. Sick fact checker. Fact checkers. Fucking.

Empire. Fucking. Empire. Which one?

God damn it. Alright, let's just see this. I'm gonna look this up real quick. It's okay.

We can keep it right. Yeah, we're feeling right. So I told you it'd be fucking good. I told you it'd be fucking good.

I told you it'd be $150 million USD. Fact checkers. He's an interdimensional fucking bookshelf ghosts. Fuck you.

Fuck you. Get the fuck out of here. Chris, I really like you, but I don't like it. I don't like it.

Hey, good casting. Just get your ass down. You did everything right. I don't like that movie.

Matt McConaughey, we love you. We love you, but God damn you suck. Jesus. He was alright.

I don't like that story like that. Unfortunately, the movie wasn't good. Yeah, I don't like it. Unfortunately, we'll never get those 82 hours back.

Those are 82 hours, man. We're never gonna get those 82 hours. We're never gonna get those 82 hours. I'd rather 127 hours myself than watch some of you guys.

I don't wanna see that shit again. This is one of Chris R. Nolan's since one of his early 90 movies, which I forget what it is, I never saw it, but it's the shortest movie since the 90s. It was a good night for the movie.

For this movie, it didn't need to be any longer. I told this leaving the theater. If it were any longer, any longer, and it kept you in that fucking ticking noise, and it kept fucking freaking the fuck out, it would have gone overboard. Sorry, pun intended, I guess.

It would have gone overboard. It just, it's so jarring. You don't want to keep pushing, keep pushing, keep pushing. It ended at the right length.

They ended up rescuing the soldiers and stuff like that. A little bit of a happy ending for a movie that's just so real. They're still countless deaths. Obviously, it's hard to call anything war-related happy, but it's not the war finished.

Again, they hammer home the idea of where a survivor was victory. And it was a key moment of the war, where if they didn't get out of there, well then the Germans just got across the English Channel. They're just gonna take over the entire fucking UK. I'm just gonna look up here, the casualty and stuff.

And over like 68,000 British wounded captured, and that's fucking insane. And what, 348? Suburved? About 300,000 were...

Yeah, about 340,000, not 340. But that was who was wrestling, 340,000 were wrestling. And that was British, French, and Belgian. But still so many fucking killed, like shit.

This is an integral war. This is an integral war. I like the direction of it. That's pretty much all I have to say about this.

There's really not much else before we keep repeating ourselves here. Did I like it? Yes. Am I gonna go back to this anytime soon?

I don't know. Honestly, I don't know. Not because it's bad. It's not something that you need to overwatch.

You really don't. There's some good scenes. It's really good. And you can watch it once, and you can watch it again five years from now.

That's what I say. And you can appreciate it every time you watch it as long as you don't like, I mean, if you're a super history buffener. If you're a love person, you'll want to keep travelling down your throat and that's great. Yeah.

And I like my war movies, kind of like the same, that you like your fucking comic movies. I mean, I'll probably revisit it sooner, but yeah, I'm still not gonna watch it on a monthly basis. It's mainly for me, it's the ticking. It's the ticking that fucking moment.

Well, it's probably stopping from seeing it again and again and again and again and again. But it is a really good movie. It really is. They do recommend it to people to go see.

Definitely go see it. Chris Rinalen, he does another good job. Is it the best war movie? There's a lot of good war movies out there.

But this one's so different. That's one thing that we also like about it. Yeah. It does separate itself.

It's not just Blood and Goror. It's not just, you know, on a scale from one to ten, what would you give it? It's such a hard question. I'd give it like a 7.5 out of 10.

Yeah, I'd be up in the high sevens. Maybe. Yeah, low eights. High sevens, low eights.

Good movie, good watch. It's definitely, we're on episode eight. It's probably top three that we've seen so far. Yeah.

I would put it up there with Spider-Man and Wonder Woman. I'd agree with that. For the ones that we've seen, definitely. Yeah, based on my tastes and movies, I'd probably put it ahead of Wonder Woman.

Yeah, fair. I mean, that's a war movie too. No, yeah, I agree. And again, this isn't one of those where I normally jump out to theaters to go see.

Yeah. But I'm glad I did see them theaters. And the trailer was good too. We watched the trailer a few weeks ago.

And the trailer is much of the same as the movie. It's very intense. I didn't think it was going to keep up that intensity, but it does. Yeah.

And I forgot where I was going to say with that. Again, fuck them off on a game tonight. Because you slept off days. I had a couple, a little bit of an afternoon.

Afternoon beverages, and I had to take a little quick nap. That's something deal. Yeah, deal. Yeah, no, it's one of those things where I was going to go see it, rush out to see it.

Okay, this is where it is. I was going to rush out to see it, but I'm glad it's on theaters because the theater provides you with that atmosphere that you're not going to get in home theater unless you have surround sound, Bose speakers to fucking blast out music. Because the music, the sound effects is the movie. That's what helps build the tension, the anxiety that you're going to experience as a movie goer.

So I'm happy we saw it in the end of it. I don't care. Yes. I think it's the end of the show.

Pretty well. What do we got coming up next? What the hell is on? That's a good question.
