由于一次意外，小西蒙不小心从巢里掉出来摔伤了头部，从此他再也没法和别的鸟儿一样唱动听的歌了，他只能叫着唯一的声音：“嚓嘭”——或许从心理学意义来说，这声音是他在遭受意外时，身体产生的本能性的、带有惩罚色彩的自我保护，而这声音却隔绝了西蒙和他面前的世界，“听上去仿佛是一扇关上的门”。 只能叫出“嚓嘭”的西蒙，就这样一天天长大。如果你是一个成年人，看着这样的孩子沉默地长大，你一定内心充满了不知所措的内疚和疼爱，就好像西蒙的爸爸妈妈一样：“他们给他好吃的，他们白天黑夜地照顾他……”可是，就是一直都没有人来，没有人走过来，站在他的对面轻声说“亲爱的西蒙，请开开门”……
