Inspired by his childhood hobby of collecting insects, he conceived the concept of "Pocket Monsters" (Pokémon). Despite financial struggles and self-doubt, Tajiri collaborated with Ken Sugimori to develop the iconic characters and gameplay. Their breakthrough came in 1996 with the release of Pokémon Red and Green for the Game Boy.
