81. FOR THE PERSON WHO NEVER KNOWS WHAT TO EAT!

from Own It with Samantha Warren · host Samantha Warren

Today, I have another solo episode for you to enjoy! One of the most common questions I get from my clients involves never knowing what to eat. So I wanted to give you a strategy to help make this decision infinitely easy every time. We are often overwhelmed by the mere number of decisions in the different areas in our life. This is called “decision fatigue,” and is defined by having too many options, which overwhelms you and paralyzes you from being able to make a decision at all. This episode is here to ease this very fatigue and you create a structure for yourself so that you can get through the day with way more energy and life. “I come from a place of nourishing and being best friends with my body, because I only get one of them. And so do you.” - Sam Altieri Top Takeaways: As a consumer, if you are given too many options, you won’t buy anything at all. Your brain needs a small number of options to choose from. The same goes for food. The less options you have, the easier it is for your brain to commit to and feel confident about a decision. “The 5 S’s”: Salad, Stir Fry, Sandwich, Smoothie, Soup. This is a quick and easy way to think about your food options. Whenever you’re ready to eat a meal, think carefully about what it actually is that you’re craving. Then pick from one of the 5 options that fits best. If you prepare something ahead of time, you may not actually want what you prepared in the future. This will leave you unsatisfied. When this happens, you will either eat more to compensate or even overeat at your next meal altogether. When you’re trying to feel satisfied, be sure you’re satisfying both your physical and psychological needs. Not every meal will be a “party in your mouth.” If you set out with that expectation, you’ll spend a lot of energy being disappointed and frustrated. Get more comfortable with meals that have the option to be less satisfying while you understand what truly makes you feel satisfied. Eating is for enjoyment and nourishment and to make you feel healthy. It’s not to restrict or limit you. Think about your current relationship with food. What helps keep you on track? Incorporate what actually makes you happy when you eat! Food is complex and dynamic. Be flexible with it so you can make better, more satisfying decisions. Food shouldn’t restrict, it should enliven you. Eat, enjoy, and move on so you can focus on living in the present in the rest of your life. Think of food as art. How many colors can you add to your meal? That is the basis of overall health, not dieting. You can lose weight while you get healthy. Eat from a place of health, not weight loss. If you master this mindset, weight loss becomes the bonus!
