The Stanford Prison Experiment is one of the most famous psychological studies ever conducted. In 1971, newly tenured psychology professor Richard Zimbardo turned the basement of the Stanford University psychology department into a fake prison where young male volunteers were divided into the roles of Prisoner and Guard .
