Oorspronkelijk was polder Maltha een keurig, groen plekje op de kaart van natuurgebied de Biesbosch. Maar alles veranderde na de overstromingen van 1993 en 1995. Nadat eeuwenlang was geprobeerd akkerland aan te winnen ten opzichte van het water, werd Maltha de eerste polder die werd teruggeven aan de natuur. De polder stroomde vol, de mensen die er woonden vertrokken en de meest bijzondere vogels streken er neer; dwaalgasten. In hun kielzog volgden algauw vogelaars uit het hele land - en daarbuiten.
