from Play Your Position
Just saw the movie "Sully" starring Tom Hanks and directed by Clint Eastwood. It tells the story of what happened on January 15, 2009 when US Airways flight 1549 landed in the Hudson River six minutes after taking off from LaGuardia Airport in NYC. Given the circumstances, Captain Sully with the assistance of his co-pilot made decisions that ended up saving the lives of all 155 passengers on board the plane that day. Yet...almost immediately, government authorities questioned whether or not he could have actually gotten the plane to an airport and landed safely rather than land it in the Hudson River. This conflict between what the authorities want to tell him could have happened vs what he saw was the only thing that could happen, is the central theme of the movie, and raises questions for each of us about how do we reconcile within ourselves decisions we make based on playing our position the best we can in that moment... that are later scrutinized and possibly determined to be faulty? How do we come to terms with decisions made in moments?
