85: Interview with Expert Neuroscientist Dr. Jared Horvath

from Dorothy and the Dealer Podcast · host Dorothy and the Dealer Podcast

Do you have a moody teenager? Likes to sleep all the time. Grumbles at the slightest mention of their name. Never wants to be seen out with you. Oh, how we could go on and on…  Well, in today’s episode of Dorothy and the Dealer, expert neuroscientist (and one of our favourite guests) Dr. Jared Horvath is back! And he’s breaking down how teen brains are designed to push boundaries, and why this rebellion actually means that they TRUST you.  Yes, you read that right. Now, stick with us! It starts with the prefrontal cortex, the bit of the brain that helps control the rest of it. When you start becoming an adult, the way it works out how to do its job is by “shutting things off”.  Like, mood. Engagement. Communication. Sounding familiar? But it also has to learn it’s edges - how far it can push things. It’s actually imperative. And that’s where the love for parents comes in. Don’t believe us? You’ll just have to listen to find out.  For everyone who doesn’t have kids, there’s also an incredible game you can get involved in - that will teach you just how easy our brains can make things up.
