85: MAGA Extortion, Trump’s Degenerate Art, & Influencer Hell

from David & Stu... Unhinged!

Welcome to David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. On this 85th episode of David & Stu Unhinged, we cover the following topics:(1) The Trump administration is reportedly considering using U.S. HIV/AIDS aid to Zambia as leverage in negotiations over access to the country’s valuable mineral sector, particularly copper and cobalt. Because roughly 1.3 million Zambians rely on U.S.-funded HIV treatment, the proposal raises moral issues for tying life-saving health assistance to economic and geopolitical objectives.(2) The Trump administration and its sycophants have been targeting cultural institutions and arts funding, including controversial actions like the mismanagement and temporary closure of the Kennedy Center, attempts to alter the White House's historic architecture, and efforts to diminish support for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Now we have learned that the NEA is awarding a major federal grant to the traditionally-focused Grand Central Atelier, raising suspicions of political favoritism due to the school’s conservative artistic ties.(3) Amid ongoing economic strain caused by U.S. sanctions, reduced external support, and internal inefficiencies, Cuba is now taking limited steps to open its economy, including cautiously allowing Cubans living abroad to invest in small private businesses. Trump’s past approach in these scenarios suggests he would likely pursue a more transactional strategy, seeking additional economic or political concessions in exchange for any easing of sanctions. As a result, Cuba’s tentative outreach to its diaspora may face pressure in a tougher negotiating environment.(4) David recounts this annual visit to the New York Botanical Gardens for the Orchid Show, reflecting on how this year's theme, "Mr. Flower Fantastic’s Concrete Jungle," was less vibrant and more crowded than previous years. He was also disgusted by the social influencers who, in their pursuit of perfect photos, disrupt both the exhibit and the authentic atmosphere of nearby Arthur Avenue, a traditionally Italian American neighborhood now facing increased crowds due to online promotion. Despite appreciating the food and local culture, David laments the impact of social media on these cherished traditions. We hope you tune in, and please leave comments.
