I vårt samfunn er det eit skarpt skil mellom religion og rettssystem. Men vi skal ikkje langt tilbake før vitne skulle sverja ved Bibelen. I førkristen tid var rettsstellet nært kopla til religionen. Lovene var gjevne av nornene, gudane søkte til tings når vanskar oppstod, og fredsavtalar kunne sverjast ved religiøse gjenstandar eller gudane, og dei juridiske leiarane var òg kultleiarar. Dette heng saman med eit evig spørsmål: Korleis kan du binde folk til å snakke sant eller oppføre seg slik dei seier?
