The 880 people on board the Kaitaki Interislander ferry on January 28th 2023 were just 12 minutes from grounding with the potential for catastrophic damage and loss of life. It was saved by anchors kicking in to stop the drift to shore, according to a damning report released by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission. KiwiRail previously been sentenced to pay $432,500 after being found guilty of exposing passengers to risk. But the report said some critical safety issues still haven't been adressed.
