A trigger is a psychological stimulus that prompts involuntary recall of a previous traumatic experience. A trigger is something that sets off a flashback, transporting the person back to the traumatic event Triggers are not always bad even though they have negative connotation A happy memory can be triggered as well. Some triggers are obvious. For example, alcoholic being around alcohol Unchecked triggers can harm current or future relationships. Being aware can help us learn how to manage them and respond more appropriately when ignited. Common triggers / what they stemmed from *fear of someone leaving / abandonment or rejection *if feedback feels like criticism / critical or disapproving parent/caregiver *feeling unimportant / unavailable or selfish parent/caregiver *loud noises / chaotic or abusive environments *control or being told how to act / being controlled or belittled *not feeling worthy / loved only with conditions, had to earn parents love *feeling like a burden / your needs were ignored or shamed *feeling dismissed or invalidated / not allowed to show emotion Triggers cause fight, flight, freeze or fawn response Fight-bullying, attacking, blaming, aggression, narcissism Flight-avoidance, fleeing, staying busy or distracted, anxiety Freeze-paralyzed with fear, dissociation, panic, unresponsive Fawn-subordination, appeasement Triggers from childhood and examples Triggers from past relationships and examples Verse of the day “Whoever sows sin reaps weeds, and bullying anger sputters into nothing.” Proverbs 22:8 MSG Quote of the day “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better.
