#90 - Recovery, Pain and the Individual - Joel Proskewitz

from The Coaches Corner University Podcast · host Paul Oneid

In this episode of the podcast, I sit down with Joel Proskewitz once again.  If you didn’t catch our previous discussion, it directly feeds into this conversation.  Both Joel and I have experienced traumatic injury and today, we discuss our experiences and how we draw on those experiences as we work to help our clients navigate their own recovery.  Joel Proskewitz is a spinal rehabilitation specialist. He deals primarily with mechanical neck and low back pain and has a special interest in pre/post spinal surgery patients. He is one of only two people in the world to teach for Professor Stuart McGill (Head of spinal biomechanics, University of Waterloo) and travels the world extensively teaching and sharing his experience, understanding and rehabilitation of the human spine to a mix of clinicians, spinal surgeons, and associated professionals. He is the only non-physician to be a permanent member of an elite spinal medical team in London, UK and works closely with surgeons, pain consultants, rheumatologists, and radiologists. He regularly presents and contributes towards complex spinal cases with his medical team. Joel has had 7 spinal surgeries himself, so fully understands the rehabilitation journey, both physically and mentally and draws from this experience to assist his patients in the ultimate hope of empowering them to look after their own spine. We discuss:Rehab and recovery timelines and the individualBiopsychosocial model - everything mattersPre-injury conditioning impacting recoveryThe mental game of rehabStress and the healing processIndividualized exercise prescription in rehabLayering exercise prescription on top of the psychological profile of the individualCoach-client relationship as the basis for everythingFind Joel:Website - Performancerx.co.uk AND thespinexchange.comIG - @joelproskewitzspine __________Paul's singular goal is to raise the bar for coaching.
