The SAF is led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who led the military coup in 2021 that ousted the civilian government. The RSF is led by General Mohamed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Darfur. This latest civil war in a nation accustomed to conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis, leading to the displacement of millions who urgently require food and medical assistance. As a fledgling democracy rich in resources but economically struggling, Sudan is a test case for whether democracy can take root in the Arab world.
