91: Supporting your adult child as they go through their divorce

This episode was inspired by mother's who contacted me in an effort to provide support to their children who are divorcing. They recognize that the issues are complex and that though they meant well they weren't always saying what was helpful. I so appreciate their grace and compassion in wanting to be there for their children who are going through such a difficult time. Anyone would be lucky to have a parent who cares that much. This episode is for those parents, but also for you you as you go through this life challenge and want and need support from your parents but they might not be saying the things you need to hear or maybe they are saying just a bit too much. Either way - this episode can help you guide them in their support as much as it can help them. If nothing else you can send them the link. Some of the highlights: Become the best listener (by not talking) Show compassion (even when you don’t understand) Your opinions of their ex is irrelevant and negative comments often not helpful. Support, validate and elevate Be helpful and resourceful. Show up and do the things without being asked (unless being asked is a thing for your child). Don’t always make it about the divorce. Have “normal” conversation. If you are helping financially do so without interfering or imposing or controlling. Don’t make this about you. Don’t offer parenting advice or opinions unless asked. Be kind and accepting of ex’s role as parent to your grandchildren without being disloyal to your child.
