In 2022, as a final-year law student, Haggstrom faced university sanctions for an open letter encouraging dialogue on race, racism, and affirmative action policies (e.g., extra exam time accommodations), which some peers labeled as "hate speech" and "harassment." The University of Saskatchewan deemed it non-academic misconduct, requiring a public apology and statement of regret.
