#96 - The Blending of Funk, Soul, Rock, Beats... and Flipping

from Business Side of Music · host The Business Side of Music Podcast

The music duo Mutual Groove is comprised of drummer, guitarist and audio engineer David Martin along with bassist, rapper, songwriter Pat Graves (who also happens to be a professional acrobat). In 2007, David formed a three-piece rock band with two fellow students (including Pat Graves) that would later become Wings of Apollo. Wings of Apollo developed a strong local following in the Washington D.C and Northern Virginia area by playing a few shows a year, when all members were back from their respective colleges. Although music seemed a promising career path, David decided to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from James Madison University to help navigate the band's journey in the music industry. In 2015, David capitalized on his education and launched his own music business, DMart Music. Specializing in recording, graphic design, and beat making, David has ventured into the world of entrepreneurship. Pat Graves love for music developed at the young age of 3 when he started sharing a room with his older brother, Ryan. It was through Ryan that he discovered artists like Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, and Eminem. Pat's passion for music didn't turn him into a musician until he was 16 when he first picked up a bass. His intentions on making a music career became serious in 2007 when he became a founding member of the three-piece rock band, Wings of Apollo. Pat graduated from Virginia Tech in 2010 with a Bachelors Degree in Creative Writing and moved to Nashville, Tennessee shortly thereafter. The two have formed "Mutual Groove" creating bass and drum influenced beats and rhythm tracks.
