Alright, let's see here everything is plugged in and alright I am ready to record Dans on here. Alright, I will just play with my boat Hi Robbie. What a nice boat. Oh Hi, thank you.
You look like a nice boy. I bet you have lots of friends I have some friends. Yeah, you know, it's it gets harder to make friends when you're 30s, you know, you hold touch You get so busy you get so busy. Yeah, but you have what's his name?
Danny. Oh, yeah I am. Yeah, my podcast calls. I was waiting a podcast calls.
He must be a sad man. Oh, you have no idea But I bet I could cheer him up. I'll give him a balloon. Yeah, I think he likes balloons.
Yeah, you probably do that Wait, I'm sorry. What's your name? Who are you? I'm Danny wise the dancing clown.
Ah Danny wise, huh? Hmm. Yeah, you got it. Alright.
Well Nice to meet you Danny wise. I I don't think I should talk to you though Right, but you are just saying it gets so hard make it fit what you're doing dirty's. Yeah, I know I am Yeah, but I mean that's more of like a me thing also. It's like it's not a big friends But it's also like to want more friends, you know, right?
But it's also like so hard to socialize when everyone's doing their own thing sometimes you need the controlled setting of a podcast I mean, you like yeah, okay. No, we're seven on each other here. No. No, no, please I insist.
No, I do enjoy Recording a podcast with my co-host Dan because it sets up a time for us, you know to kind of hang out and like bullshit Whatever. So why do you what do you bring that up? I was just thinking maybe like a podcast of your own Yeah, I mean it's a good idea. I just don't know what I would you know talk about Maybe you would like a podcast that's about current events you could bet bad mouth politicians Yeah, and you wouldn't have to do any research I mean you could just say what you see on Twitter, but act like you came up with it Yeah, I mean I could do that.
It's it takes a lot of effort to just like That's not really my thing. I'm not for me. What if you just had a podcast where it's just like it's like you and you're like I'll just talk and that'll be interesting Yeah, I mean I know people do that but I think they're always so funny when they do it And I just don't think I could I could be that funny, you know, yeah, probably Rob it's Dan what I have a confession to make I was dany wise the dancing glam the whole time Are you wait this whole time? We've been recording this podcast.
Yes underneath this this caked-on white makeup and this all this drool running down My chin. It's just been me your co-host Dan. That was a test of loyalty now I was tempting you with other podcasts and you passed my test by saying that you're not funny enough to do it by yourself Yeah, and I was gonna kill you if you fail the test to let's go eat your damn arm. Yeah Damn arm Well much like this tableau this week's movie has been a story of friendship persevering overall This week on King me you'll float to it's it King me welcome to King me the official Stephen King movie podcast the official podcast of King me the official podcast of doing little skits Evolving the format say official podcast of both of those things.
Yeah, you're fun in meandering intros. I like it Yeah, well, you know, it's the official podcast of heavy editing Now it's also the official podcast of regrets about how we approach that or not even approach But just like things I wish I'd done differently Mm-hmm. I regret I understand why I named my guy Danny wise the dancing clown, right? But I think it would have been funnier if I said I'm Bill Scarskart Yeah, I mean you should maybe maybe you say that and then edited in later Okay, well, I gotta get it clean.
I got it clean. Yeah, I think you got clean. All right. I am realizing that my Attempt at this penny wise is basically just like like Midwest like Wisconsin, you know guys.
Oh, hey Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, sure you'll float. Yeah, you'll float all right. Oh, just get on down there. Oh, we'll get you floating in no time Dan what are you drinking there Dan not well?
I'll tell you what it's bubbly. Yeah, it's very low calorie What is it? Is that a hard-seltzer? No, nothing of the sort is that a tea it is it's a spark It's a trader Joe's sparkling black tea with peach juice.
Oh, that sounds nice. I highly recommend it. What are you drinking? I'm not drinking anything booze.
Yeah, I got a big cup of booze You'll booze bag Dan I've been pretty good. Yeah, pretty good can't complain. I'm good. Of course This is our first main feed episode post Return from hiatus that we've that we didn't have banked right no.
Oh, Mr. Mercedes part two. Yeah. Yeah, we did one last week Or two weeks.
Are you shitting me? Oh Man, oh man Well, we shook the cobwebs off in that episode and now we are off we are sharp. We are ready I am razor sharp ready to talk about 2017's it it baby that old kooky clown Pennywise is up to his old antics again the same antics from the first time they made this movie and the book But we don't talk about that do we oh man, we definitely will not be talking about this book We will not be talking about a specific part of this book. Yep, particularly.
That's right Whoops oh whoopsie all right 2017 it The year is 2017 Donald Trump is in the White House Things are looking bad, but we wouldn't know how bad things could possibly get oh my god. Oh my god We were so pampered were we not? I'd kill for 2017 right now Finn Wolfhard was just a boy instead of a much taller boy Yeah Now I know that you you would you actively hate stranger things are you a hater? Yes, okay in my opinion?
Uh-huh. It's not even that strange. You know what? I thought it maybe started out something strange and now status quo man.
This is what I expect from the new normal Yeah, that's the thing they shifted the overton window This is me normal buddy to me Vekna is a normal guy. Well, that's pretty twisted So Yeah, I don't care for the show it does to my brain the same things that like Walking dead and like South Park did in my brain where I hear people talking about them I'm like one that's still on yeah, and to why why are you watching that sure? You know I think the bigger So I have seen all of stranger things right. Oh, I think it's it's like a dumb show This is our this is the this is the this is the speaking of 2017.
This is the Carlos MNC episode of WTF This is a cool man. This is a fucking cool All right, you see why yeah, why did you steal all those jokes? Why did you steal all of that time out of your own like watch the dreaded stranger things program? Yeah, see like there's so many other shows and whatever and I'm like I'm like blowing through shows and it's just like it's just another dumb show I totally understand your point of view though Like the biggest problem with the walking dead or South Park or any of any show like that is its fan base anything that like People give a shit that much about is probably a problem.
Yeah, I mean, that's like that's really what it is It's like the seemingly random selection as this being the thing people care about yeah I mean that makes no sense, but then when you dig into it. I mean it does make sense and the way in which it makes sense is annoying It's like it's just a freaking nostalgia trip dude. Yeah, it's my freaking childhood It's freaking it's so fucking annoying dude. It's honestly I like I watched this last season right and there was like there was some fun aspects to it But then like you know I could totally see there are like I was getting annoyed with the show every fucking episode It's like an hour and a half long or more and I'm like I'm looking at these kids that are like all in their mid 30s now And I'm like I don't know man.
I don't know about any of this anymore But again, it's like a dumb show but like you know I haven't watched South Park in like over 20 years at this point and yet It's still on the air it's still on the air and people still fucking watch it man dude It's not like I've it feels like once every six months like that's how I can mark the passage of time is between times Where someone's like did you see the new South Park? I'm like why are you talking about the new South Park new to you? They're like and then they're like it's actually like a it's actually like a pretty good satire of no cancel culture Whatever it's not a good satire of anything Stringer things is not a good homage to anything. It's a lot of ripping things off blatantly.
Yeah without any like Without an expensive or Hardest or effective. Yeah, nothing. Nothing. I feel like the perfect like the perfect name for the people responsible for that is just Duffer brothers.
It's like oh we just thought yeah, we just duff this show out. We just offered out and yeah Yeah, hate it. But yeah, no, it's it's that's the thing. I don't think I would care except for like the Seeming manufactured consent around it being yeah, show worth watching and caring about and talking about right the cultural event I guess that is like the new season of stranger things.
Yeah, like any new season of strange things when it comes out It's like the biggest fucking deal, but that's also like Netflix's Only fucking thing they have going for right. Yeah, I mean like to the point where I am convinced this is a This is like I guess another kind of podcast. I could have pitched you I'm convinced that it's like a scyop that it's a Netflix scyop that Like the idea the fact that Kate Bush and Metallica were both like Yeah, those were like the big takeaway songs those are the and they were both like we are so amazed by the response that this is like the influence of stranger things on the general public has been overwhelming the idea that yeah, it's It's such Horse shit. There's no way stranger things is so popular like isn't Netflix like about to file for bankruptcy or something like because no one's watching it Yeah, like it's yeah, I mean Put so much money into like original programming and saying like Metallica to say oh wow man rock on Can't believe thanks for thanks for loving the music rock on wow Yeah Right There they've spent too much money they keep increasing the price so people are like you know dropping off left and right Mm-hmm and like and honestly there's not like when Netflix like it's like first came out with the streaming service or whatever There were shows that people want to watch and now they've lost a bunch of their shows Yeah, and and there's so many other streaming services now But you're like you know Netflix isn't like it used to be Netflix was like the top tier streaming service Like if you wanted a streamer a streamer or whatever Netflix was like the the first one that you got right and now it like with now Everyone's clamoring for those AT&T originals.
Yeah, I mean you have the audience network AT&T you know there's so many others to choose from but no like with fucking Disney plus an HBO Max or whatever the fuck it's called like You don't need Netflix. Yeah between those two services you get you know A lot of fucking content that probably covers most of most people's interests Another podcast idea I could have pitched you is the informed consumer podcast. Yeah, that's what we are right now Yeah, we are but yeah I mean like I I refuse to believe that stranger things has the clout that I'm told it has I'm reminded of The OA which was like another situation like this where yeah, there's no way it was that popular but Like yeah, I don't know. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I got it Like we've spent so much time talking about stories as it is It's like it's a dumb show and anybody who takes it more seriously than that. I disagree with you disagree with me Well, no, I I read you and while I am taking it too seriously. Oh, yeah, you're in the contrarian way. Yeah Hey speaking of shameless 80s nostalgia plugs 2017 is it right um starring Starring Bill Scars guard Bill Scars guard another scars guard.
He's a read like like this movie He is a remake of an earlier scars guard Yeah, yes scars guard wolf art Yeah, Jaden Martell Sophia Lillis Jeremy Ray Taylor chosen Jacobs Wyatt Olaf Um, we're the biggies here. Um Jill and Hall and de Grom those are my chosen Jacobs. Oh, yeah, come on come on We have Nicholas Hamilton and King alum Owen Teague King. Oh, yeah.
Oh my god. I knew he looked familiar. So he's in a he's another thing that we have coming up But he was also in 2016 cell Yeah, he was in cell. That's even what I recognized him from I recognized him from the stand right well That's yeah, that's the project that's oh in our future.
So wait cell happened But see this is sort of a callback to me being confused earlier about this being the first new episode I couldn't really stick the landing the plane is crashing into the goddamn mountain So he was in I know I had to actually I had to look this up because I saw that he was in the movie cell And I don't really remember much of that movie. There's a part where like John Q. Suck and Sam Jackson and their group They go to like an all boys school. Oh, yeah, right?
and it was like the headmaster was Stacy Keach and One of the one of the main boys was this kid Owen. Huh? Yeah, it's weird. How about that?
I'm also so now I'm looking at Owen Teague's You know full yeah, it's a wonderful filmography and I'm seeing that he was in something called Walt before Mickey Oh, no, which I think is um That's like the rhyme you say to remember what order to drink your liquor and take your pills in But you played a young Walt Disney in that which is kind of funny. Do you know who played Roy Disney? No, who John Heater? Weird, do you know who played Charlotte Disney which I'm assuming as someone's wife was it Pedro?
No, it was Joe No, it was not Pedro was not Tina the llama before you even ask oh It was Jody sweeten. What a I don't know that is from a full house. Oh, yeah, okay, duh Anyway, I want to watch that for King me Still Walt after all these years The last Walt's the last which would be every bio pick about Walt Disney, you know, right? It's with that one with Tom Hanks as Walt Disney just everybody who played Walt Disney in the same movie.
Yes Waltz Put that in the one for us pile So yeah, we got a bunch of nobodies in this movie and there I said it's a bunch of children. Well, here's the thing Dan You have been Wolfart here at this point like the first season of Stranger Things is already out He's already like kind of a big deal. Yeah, that was during the legitimate phase of Stranger Things popularity before the consent manufacturing began But yeah, no, that's like yeah He he was cast in this presumably because of his chops playing a child in the 80s And I got to say I liked him in this because like I feel like the key to the to having like the funny kid in a Stephen King Movie is like they can't actually be funny. They have to think they're funny.
Yeah Like I'm thinking mostly of like Corey Feldman and Stan by me that to me is like the perfect King jokester kid where he's just like it's like you're kind of fucking annoying right and like everyone else is like a little annoyed by him I think he did a good job of that. I'm remembering my experience seeing this in the theater and people just like Larking at every fucking line he had which is embarrassing of course. Yeah, that's a bear I it was on this rewatch. I did find it like I completely agree everything that he said was not funny and I found to be quite Greeting Which is again, it's an important well like the formula and It's like how on a how on like a rich pork sandwich.
You want some bit of greens you want some of that broccoli robbo You're right and like knowing where the character goes like well, I didn't see the second movie yet. Hold on Oh, that was a little sneeze break for me. That was incredibly professional. Thank you I'm gonna drop into sound effect of a guy sneezing Just like it's the biggest sneeze.
Yeah, maybe a guy throwing up or shitting himself Shooting himself in a slide whistle That's what Pennywise does to scare one of the kids. Yeah, he shits himself, but you hear a slide whistle I lost myself here. Oh, yeah, I haven't seen the second movie yet. I was waiting for this show to watch But if it's anything like the original series, you know, he becomes like a stand-up comedian or whatever But he's also like kind of a hack and nobody like he's on definitely on like a downswing.
Yeah, um, which makes sense I mean, he's like he's like the most annoying funny kid ever, right? But I got it to like I really I kind of really like this cast I did have some I agree over you know with some of the stuff But I really thought that most of the kids did a really good job No, I I had actually pin pointed the worst actor in the movie and it's an adult for sure. Oh We can't wait till we get there. Oh, I'll keep it in my back pocket.
Keep them listening. Yeah, keep it in your pants, please Sorry, but what if they scrub ahead because they need to know I'll put a timestamp. All right good. Yeah Yeah, who's this who's this motherfucker directed by oh, we have a second king alum in this in this picture Oh, please tell me Nicholas Hanson Hamilton.
Excuse me who plays Henry Bowers. Uh-huh. You're gonna love this Yeah, Henry Bowers was in the dark tower. What yeah?
The same year what yeah big year for him at all. I don't either. I have no idea who he was Yeah, I truly truly couldn't tell you yeah, maybe he was like one of the kids who was being a drain of chrome harvested Maybe but it's truly anybody's guess Lucas Hanson. He plays.
Yeah, all right well moving Lost to time jumping on Moving right along here 2017 the world is crumbling stranger things is the new thing a true canary in the coal mine I Mean you like They may have been wanting to remake this movie for a long time But it really does feel like the success of stranger things spurred this movie, right? Yeah, what year does stranger things? They came out in 2016. That was the first year.
Okay, so this was probably because this was also like in a glut of Stephen King projects getting adapted right because this is around the time at like I'm thinking Gerald's game I'm thinking obviously dark tower also right yeah, I mean like this came out In September of 2017 yes, so yeah, I mean like I don't know it definitely feels like you know Stranger things comes out whenever like middle of 2016 and it's a huge success and studios are like let's make fucking like throwback You know time What do you call it period pieces like sending the 80s with kids like that's that's the hat ticket now Yeah, get me wolf hard. Yeah, I want you to make copies of this until it until it's completely illegible until it's totally degraded Yeah, that's what Brendan Gleason says to his vet about his pet wolf get me wolf hard So the issue is that is a wolf is it's too flat to flaccid yeah, yeah Oh, I thought he said what was that like you better try to get me pregnant tonight because in the morning I don't know if I'm gonna be pregnant or whatever It was season take we can't know yeah, yeah Yeah, we haven't had any uh, Stella scars guard movies, right? He hasn't popped up in anything I don't first scars guard. I think we may be cracking open a fresh pack of scars guards alright.
Well, it's not gonna be our last I know that oh right. Yes. Yes looking forward to it. Yeah.
Yeah, we have more scars guard to come now directed by Yeah, Andy Muschietti Muschietti. Oh, it's gay Oh, yeah, he's Argentinian. Oh never mind. Never mind.
Well, actually I know a lot of fascists defected to Argentina after Well, yeah, so they're very well. Yeah, that stands. Yeah, his first yeah his director We all looks like his first feature like the movie was a horror movie called mama mama mama mia My mom But his first so I guess his English language debut. Yeah is this and then it chapter two also yes, so like this movie I'm sure like you know everybody knows the fucking like behind the scenes kind of shit now But like a quick recap was like this got passed around to a few directors and like Kerry Fukunaga was like he He wrote a draft of it Which included the scene that you know, we didn't want to talk about the forbidden scene.
Yeah with the book with the the child sexine And then the studio was just like well on that we're not gonna do that And he's like no you have to it's my vision. Yeah, yeah, it's my vision to show children fucking Freak and they're like all right. Well, you're fired. Yeah, oh where in Hollywood are we gonna find a director who is willing to not show Child sex.
I don't know Mosquietti Yeah, so I didn't know that I didn't know that that was like a sticking point for him apparently that was a big sticking point Weird hill to die on absolutely. Yeah, I Mean child sex hill. Yeah, unfortunately named Hill Where do you live? It's you know Like around the park there like you go past that like up that hill that's over there.
You mean child sex hill. Yeah. Yeah We're trying to get the name change, but there's like a lot of red tape The historical preservation society. Yeah, they're like my ass Lot of overlap with our local namblah chapter I Talk about jokes from South Park.
That's nice So I mean should we just frickin jump on in on this is there anything preliminary that you want to? Nah, all right. Well, let's get up. Let's get this often.
Yeah, let's just jump into the fire here jump into the it 2017 That's right. It 2017 so we got it. We got a classic horror cold open. Yeah, I do so love the horror cold open Yes, it's yeah, it's great.
Yeah, and this one like I feel like this is such a well-known This is like one of Stephen King's like biggest books, right? Like every I mean besides the fact that it's a doorstop of a book Oh, come on It's also one of his most successful like people fucking love this one, right? Yeah, so everybody knows the cold open to this fucking This story sure with with sick bill bill bill is just a bag of bones for sick invalid Yep, mom playing spooky diegetic piano That was such a weird touch. I loved it.
Yeah, just plinking away other Pian It's like this piano is too in tune. She just like makes it spoke here Yeah, and you know just young Georgie he Georgie just wants to play with his his paper boat Here's an issue that I have with this scene in this time period. It's not too scary well 1988 I mean this kid I know this kid is supposed to be like whatever six seven years old or something But like a kid in 1988 I feel like it's not gonna be that excited about a paper boat and I feel like there are things that keep popping up along the way in this Movie where it's like this is just a story about kids from the early 60s that they inject like new kids on the block and like street fighter Just like whatever the modern, you know 1988 thing was yeah, like that they're not I don't know. There's no there's no change it like they're still like the bullies still look like fucking almost like greasers Like they look like things like it not like I mean the kids got a mauler whatever, but I feel like it's it I feel like it's not said in 1988 not not strictly speaking now Yeah, like nothing about this movie really says 1988 to me So whatever but there's what about new kids on the block.
Yeah, new kids on the block Street Fighter I get it the the movie marquee that says Batman lethal weapon to knight in there on Elm Street 5. Yeah Yeah, that was out um yeah, I agree I mean it's like that is the tricky thing with like a lot of Stephen King stuff especially the stuff involving like stories We're like childhood and growing up those are themes It's like his his sense of childhood is so rooted in his own experience that like yeah This this is a little bit dissonant, but it kind of works for me like I don't know like So what is Pennywise right like are we getting it? Are we getting ahead of ourselves if we start talking about like what Pennywise represents and like whether or not that works I we're not getting ahead of ourselves We can talk about whatever because like we already did a version of this movie that's a lot of the same beats So we do kind of have to distinguish this one from the other one um Yeah, I was just gonna re-release that one and like loop it to hit like a hit our hit our you know time But so like Pennywise right the inspiration for Pennywise is John Wayne Gacy. Yes That's like sort of understood to be like the most A to B interpretation right but also And this is interesting to me okay has Pennywise what's his deal he every 27 years right he he comes out of the frickin well Collects a blood sacrifice right gobbles up some kids yep gobbles up some kids ruin some lives and then heads back down into the well right sounds like capitalism I do think it kind of works in the 50s and the 80s because those are both like boom eras uh-huh and it's sort of like I Do you think do you think that was intentional intention?
Yeah, I don't think so I mean no I don't really I'm just saying that's kind of why it works for me is like if the idea is to like Project this like loss of innocence like not even that it's like not even that it works that way perfectly in this or even like more than loosely if I'm being honest but point being just like I Do think these sort of like So the thing that he's unconsciously projecting on a childhood is that like prosperity? Like his concept of childhood is just like all needs provided for and that loss of childhood is Those needs being taken away were corrupted or perverted or inverted or whatever Mm-hmm and I yeah, I don't know I just feel like the 80s works kind of the same way where it's like you're a kid And things are going pretty good. You know there's money going around There's cocaine for everybody all right all these kids are on blog I mean Finn Wolfhard most of all the kid won't right he can't stop coming so fucking Robin Williams Yeah, it's a fucking little blow monkey and So like yeah, I mean I don't know I just that that kind of popped into my head I do see what you're saying like they are similar errors when you're coming out of You know the right like the 50s in early 60s is this huge boom in America right? Yeah, we're two is over Everybody you know, that's the 2.5 kids white pick a fence house all that shit right in the 80s you had a You know Ronald Reagan who was like there was a resurgence of that idea of like?
You know the conservative idea of what America should look like which is you know that 50s ideal Which you know, did it ever exist in that exact way or is that just like everybody's sugar-coated memory of it? But that also is kind of why I think the 80s are an interesting choice because in so many ways like There is like, you know, you look at like the fucking rockabilly resurgence and just like those weird sorts of ways that like that Era creeps into the culture Well, it's like it is just like this weird facsimile of an era of prosperity much like a you know a giant spider disguises a clown yeah, right yes, I Totally see that like the idea that Like in the 80s right you like you're saying like you have like a weird rockabilly resurgence. Yeah like friend of the show Brian Seder yeah Ryan Seltzer Brian's muddling tea with peach juice more like there was like this huge fascination with like the 50s in in the 80s right like Like in pop culture and stuff there all of like People that were kids in the 50s grew up and they started making movies in the 80s. Yep So you had a lot of movies like fucking stand by me exactly now right in a right around 1988 I don't know if it was 88 or 87 or whatever, but it was right around that right Christine Right so all of these like the fascination with the 50s right and yeah, like this is set in 1988 Which is like I am just like it's like it's almost they're almost yeah I get it it makes sense for it to be in this time period where things are almost exactly not exactly the same as the 50s But they're trying they're it's a Whatever bastardized copy.
Yeah, you know society is trying to go for mm-hmm. All right. All right. Sorry man fine I was just throwing something out there not well fine.
I'm a fucking idiot. No, you said it. That's fine. Hey, no It's okay.
No people like you go on to live happy productive life every day Yeah, you could get a job bag and groceries So let's talk about Georgie and what happens to his arm Well, well which one the left arm is just fine. Oh, yeah, unfortunately. I am talking about the right arm. Oh, okay Well, that one is gone.
Well, so I mean yeah, so we all we all know what happens beat by beat Georgie his boat goes down the storm drain and who's there to retrieve it, but yeah, Pennywise the dancing Pennywise the dancing clown. Do you okay? So this is our first introduction to the Bill Scars guard Pennywise, right? What do you think of the clown's design?
I love I like the design you like it. I quite like it I think it's a little I guess if I have a complaint like it's like a little too menacing like Again, like, you know, I think I agree. I think I like it It does feel more menacing than the Tim Curry version the Tim Curry version looks like a clown and then he turns This one looks like a clown that I do not want to be near at all, but but okay to my earlier point about how this Does kind of work is like an like it like telling this in the 80s. Yep.
So 60s Pennywise The subtext is that he's a scary monster. Yes. There is no 80s. There's no subtext in the 80s Subtext is dead already.
Sure. So I think part of me kind of likes it like it is just like the again I'm gonna use I'm gonna call Pennywise a metaphor for capitalism and just like like the mask is kind of slipped at that point in history Like it is just like balls to the wall Gordon Gekko greed is good shit Right. So for him to be just kind of like slobbering and like quivering just like almost horny at the thought Yes, I do think there's something to it and I also think it's kind of necessary In the context of this being a remake Like you need to do something to you can't do it Tim Curry did and you can't play it down more, right? Yes I yes, I agree.
Yeah, I don't I don't dislike, you know the clown or whatever I I just feel you know It does start off a little menacing right off the bat. Yes. Yeah, you know and then like The way that he is like talking to Georgie and he's being like weird. He's not being like he's literally drooling.
Yeah, he literally drooling Right like Georgie's like I mean like it is a paper boat, you know And he's like I don't know Just thinking like if I was like six or seven years old and I lost a paper boat in a storm drain and there was this clown down there I'd be like fucking keep it man I am not doing it right. Yeah considering That's a fair point like every other kid in the movie as soon as they see him there Like I gotta get out of here now. Yeah front of the only one who doesn't is sweet little Georgie You know like I feel like the the back and forth goes like a long way like he's the fact that he's like more kind of like theatrical to compensate for how Visibly deranged he is like You know, I guess it kind of works, but maybe I'm maybe I'm gonna walk back my most recent hot take by my thesis stands interesting like The effect of like Pennywise opening his mouth and like the rose of teeth Yeah, I mean it's like I don't know about it up front. I feel like it's maybe Is it too much up front?
Are they showing too much? That's kind of like I feel that way a little bit I don't know. I don't know. I guess like the fact that they're consistent with that the whole way through like all they do is show Throughout the entire thing.
It is like yeah, they do. I don't know Would it have been scarier if they didn't maybe but like Like I don't know subtlety like you said has gone here and whatever so they're just going for it Like to me like the teeth that's definitely scary like he rips off his arm then Georgie like falls and whatever and then like the long arm Yeah, that comes out of the dream that to me is even like more unsettling than teeth somehow Yeah, you know what it's like and weirdly I don't know if the arm is as unsettling without the teeth first I'm thinking about it. It's like if all you saw well like if all you saw is like Georgie stick his arm in and then like come up with no arm Right, and then you just see like this big funny fake clown arm reach for him I don't know. That's not really scary.
That's not like it's not a sinister. Um, this is uh, you know what? I'm gonna try out a theory I texted you about okay, um with regard to Spider-man, Sam Raimi Spider-man. Okay, you know my theory here the idea that you can get away with like showing too much if you Don't go that far again.
So like in Sam Raimi and Spider-man Yeah, we all remember when the green goblin attacks the parade and he has that one pumpkin bomb that just instantly turns everybody into skeletons Right, you're like why isn't he using this bomb on everybody? He could why doesn't use it on spider-man He could make quick work of the spider-man if only he had one more of those skeleton bombs Right, but the sort of like the knowledge that that's like in his arsenal kind of just like keeps you afraid that he's gonna use it again That's true. You're just like oh shit is this the skellington bomb Right, it does set a tone for the rest of the fucking movie right like seeing Pennywise immediately like uh I mean like as like a real monster like in the original movie the miniseries It's Tim Curry and he has like these big fake short-track Dracula teeth. Yeah, right and that's like what it's fine Yeah, but this is like the image of it is much scarier Mm-hmm And then yeah, it sets a tone for the rest of the movie and you know that he's a bad clown You know he's going to attack these children and you like I don't know I really do feel like There's some I do think that there are some actual like creepy scary images in this movie.
I agree You know Pennywise like I do have some issue with like anytime There's like a big like scare the music just gets like really loud and they have to know it's like this big like Whatever crashing kind of thing which I don't think is necessary every single time I don't think so either like the sound design in this movie is insane. Yeah, uh pager's getting really mad at me while She went in the other room. She's like it's just I understand that you need the volume up to hear the dialogue But it's just too goddamn loud when the yeah When any sound effects are score kicks in you're like he lose and back to the future. I'm afraid you're just too darn loud quite right, uh, but yeah, and also I felt like the way A lot of the scares were shot was kind of Yeah, it didn't really work for me like well.
Yeah, it was like this weird like a Oh weird cutting or strobing effect. Um A lot of like a lot of handheld camera. Yeah like fast like shaky kind of movements. Yeah, um, which like I feel like really kind of Yeah, like the the sequence where I felt it most was um, what's his name when he's outside the house and he's getting chased by that leper Yeah, um, what is the name Eddie?
Um That to me was like the most egregious and like kind of disappointing because it was like a rare instance of like practical effects in the movie which I felt like really good like just show it man. Yeah, it's also like way Spookier if the cat. I don't know if the camera's in control like yeah, well, right? I mean like I guess that's like kind of a bigger issue with like horror movies now.
Anyway, is that like Uh, yeah, there's so many like fast cuts that like you You know, they're they use like the cuts to like maybe get away with something But you lose like some of the scares like if it's if it's in one shot Yeah, and you see like the fucking the shot of um mike It's early on when he's delivering uh meet to that like yeah fucking thing right the building and the door is chained up and then in the shot like he's like getting A package out of his bike or whatever and then you see like a hand like a burnt hand like come creeping out of like a crack in the door Right and then another one and then another one right like all of that happens like in one shot Like just that is extremely creepy. Yeah, and like you know the tension builds then if you're doing like fast cuts Like you're talking about like where the leper is chasing heady like you're trying to get it You're trying to like get across like some sort of a kinetic feeling like you know some frantic kind of like thing But also you're losing some of the it kind of does the opposite like it right the whole time It's just sort of like reminding you that it's a movie Yes, um and I think of like I don't know I think of like okay. What's the scariest thing that's ever happened in a movie? Oh, I'll tell you oh, please.
I can't believe I have to tell you you should know mr. Movie man But um obviously it's in Mulholland drive where he goes out behind the diner and it's the the mud lady Yeah, the mud lady And why is that scary because it's a static shot and she moves very fluidly. Yeah, I mean there's other shit happening Obviously the sound is insane and that's that the light gets crazy the whole thing feels like a fever But like we're right the way that she moves in the static shot is like other world Yes, it like she's on a dolly or something and she just like slides into frame Yeah, and you're like you're right if if the leper was maybe a little bit I don't know if you saw it and if he was moving a little bit more like like I get it like he's you know He's a lagging him. He's falling apart.
Yeah, he's falling apart get it But I don't know but maybe even just like the camera work then. I don't know. Yeah, whatever. Yeah, fucking whatever I don't even care about this movie whatever So Art the kids right so mike He is homeschooled His parents died.
I don't know who is he staying with is it his uncle or I think I think his uncle I think he said uncle I might be wrong though He but he works in like a basically like a slaughterhouse like a farm or whatever Yeah, his family raises sheep They raise sheep and they you know they tell sheep they sell them for meat and whatever right and there's like a scene of Mike using one of those bolt guns. Yeah, right. I was surprised see that I've heard I completely forgot about that. Yeah, I've only ever seen that in movie one other time right?
Yeah, what um oh man the uh The actor that uh, this name. Oh god. What is his name? He's um, he's Portuguese, right?
He's Portuguese. He's from Portugal. Yeah Portuguese. Yeah.
Yeah, he's Portuguese What hello? I'm not Portuguese. What are you saying about me? I'm not Portuguese.
I'm a Spaniard. Oh my god Bobby How have you been? I have it. Oh man.
I have not talked to you since before the pandemic, baby I know dude. How you been man? Um, I'm good. You sound different, but you know everybody everybody's been through some shit.
So I get it. I get it. Jeez. I've I've had Goveys.
Oh, you got covid see? Okay. All right. I had uh, coveys already now Yeah, first time.
Yeah, the the the original J. C. I I am uh, how do you say in how in English do you say patient zero? You were patient zero?
Well, how man did you give it to Tom Hanks and and and uh, what's his uh, what's his name? Um, oh, I read that Wilson read it well. Yeah, he's home See, I see I you could say I gave it to both of them. Wink wink Did you fuck both?
Jeez. Wow in his house. I mean, yeah, no, I know they were filming something in Australia. I I was filming Oh, you were filming you were filming the sexy and see.
Oh, wow. I mean that is definitely something that I would like to see I send you a copy. Oh, thank you. Thank you.
I have it encrypted All right. Well, yes, um, of course, uh, Tom Hanks uh, he already he rebrised his role as uh, David s pumpkin in this next video. See? Oh, wow.
You so you you you have sex with him as David s pumpkins See. Oh, wow. That's gotta be hilarious I I always know when he's about to save a line, but it's always still very funny. It's very funny.
Yeah. Yeah, all right. Well good Know what? Yeah, so you're just spreading it around.
Yes, yes I mean, I I'm a man of your prowess. I mean you you know, you fucked on Hanks and read Wilson I'm sure that you were probably having sex with so many people that you're probably the reason that you know, uh, it spread so fast well Yeah, I like to think I played my part but um I like to think that yeah, I like to think that I like to think Right, right, right, right. Um, yes, you do have covid. Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I did. I don't think I didn't have covid original. I uh, I had one of the one of the later versions one of the copies. Well.
Well, yeah, jay, I have those two Oh, yeah. Oh, okay. All right. So because I mean think about your time um, covid's sure You have run down your symptoms.
Oh my symptoms to you. Um, let's see. I I you know, I had a bit of a fever see um I Well, I lost my sense of smell and taste. Yeah, right.
Uh, if labor is by I can think of nothing sad It was yeah, I I ate nothing but by yeah, and I couldn't taste anything. Oh, you're a man after my own heart Uh, yeah, and uh, but what is not on that list what is conspicuously absent from that list that you experienced nonetheless Was that making sex tape with Javier? Is coming back to you. Yes I sent you a copy.
Oh, all right. Well, thank you that that one's just a link on a public website. Oh, well, it's not even encrypted man. Come on On a public website.
I'm sorry. I forgot to encrypt it All right. All right. All right.
Javier. I well, I don't appreciate you putting my business out there like that. Oh Well, it's salted your insults Could you say that have you seen this movie it from 2017 see oh really? Yeah, would you like would you like to stay a talk talk more?
Well, I oh memento. Okay, eat part uno or partos part uno Unfortunately, I have only seen part two you only saw the second one see I don't like even know what was happening. I don't like movies for little kids I'm a grown man with a healthy sexual appetite right you heard that there might be a child sex scene in this and you had no interest in that You're not a you're not a sex creepier. That's a sex freak.
I miss I miss I miss sex Uh, uh, yes master of sex. Yeah, yeah She could say I'm a master of sex. You're a real Michael Sheen. All right.
Oh, there's a video of that. I Is that what you had the idea for that show idea for that video? Yeah, all right Javier Michael she that's what they call him after I play the oil It's a nice sheet All right, you're gonna have to stop sitting on Dan. He's gonna record the rest of the episode with me I'm not saying on him.
You're not sitting on where you go. He better sleep He's just taking a little math. That's the S. I see I'm a bit I'm a bit of a thin man All right, well, can you can you wake him up?
I could try there. We'll try shake shake them. Oh, shake them away, please Wake up wake up. Okay.
Wake up. All right. All right. All right.
All right. All right. Maybe we'll have you back on for when we talk about it part two geez I hope not I don't know these go so well. Bye.
Bye. Bye. Goodbye Yeah, so um mike works on a sheep farm with his uncle, right? And he he doesn't want to shoot the sheep in the head with the bolt gun now So his uncle does it and he just like just real quick.
He just like it does it. Yes Um, and he goes he has this little speech about again Really lending itself to my theory about this about Pennywise being an analogy or metaphor for capitalism Uncle has that little speech where he's like I it's like you live your life out here and make your own decisions and get yours or you're in there with the sheep And you won't even know you're in there until it's too late. Someone hits you with that bolt gun. That's true um The uncle he's been in a ton of shit.
He was in the x-files like he was in a bunch of episodes What's his name? His name is Stephen Williams. Um He was in the blues brothers. Whoa, he's fucking has been around Who was he in the blues brothers?
He was like a trooper like a state trooper. Oh, oh, um, all right So he's the titular mr. x from x-files. Yeah, he's mr.
x-files Um Like these other kids like we talked about the fin wolf art he plays rich he he's the the jokester um, you have uh stuttering bill you have Um, Ben who is I guess just the fat kid. He's also very smart. I like this kid a lot He was like he's like a little historian of uh of dairy. I like that too.
I like uh Yeah, whatever I like that too And the girl who plays baverly I think is really really good in this. Yeah, I agree. She does a good job She does a really good job. I thought like um When she's I don't know like she was very convincing and everything Especially like in the kind of like fun sweet moments that she's having with uh the other boys Like I don't know everybody I just felt like all these kids like had a really good chemistry with each other, you know I agree this felt like an actual group of friends like it didn't it didn't feel terribly like acted You know like it felt pretty organic right and like even like to the point where like when they're fighting and stuff and it gets like You know kind of mean or nasty or whatever like even that is like it feels Real and then like the way that they're like they make up where it's just like all right We have to make up now and like do the thing because we're all in this together and shit, you know Like like yeah, I know we were fighting before but we were done with that now like um Um, yeah, I'll tell you what I think I think my favorite of the kids just like acting wise and really is just like one moment Yeah frickin stanley why at olef that moment in the tunnel after he gets like the bejesus scared out of him after he gets separated from the group Yeah, and he's just like crying his eyes out.
He's like, why did you know? Why'd you let me go off a little like why do you guys leave me by myself? I was just like that is like so fucking real and these kids are just like kind of hugging him and holding him and like yeah Oh my god. Yeah, that was like Yeah, that was really good.
He really saw that. Yeah, it was really it was really good. Like all these kids. They're like Uh freakishly good actors.
Yeah Did you know there's a character in this movie named belch huggens? Yeah, they say his name I think so. They're like but and your belch huggens. He's like your goddamn right.
I bet am yeah The the woman was calling a tendons and belch huggens And he just burped And she goes very disdainfully she goes present She checks his name off the list Uh Yeah So what did you think of uh like the gang of bad kids? I thought they were so bad Like their behavior. Yeah, I mean like like in true like seeping fashion. They're like evil evil kids Yeah, henry bowers is like A psychopath or a true psychopath to the point where you're like, whoa Is this for real?
But also it is for real like I remember it's for real I remember you know all those years ago. We started doing this show We talked about these psycho greasers and kiskasay and we'd be like We'd be like that's too much. Right, but now I'm like no they walk among us Right fully except that they walk among us also like another way I think the 80s of it all kind of helps where it's like I maybe buy this kid more in the 80s than I do Yeah in the 60s or at least it's just like again. Maybe it's just like closer to my lived experience So it just feels more plausible and they've always I could agree with that I think in the 80s like If you were like a bully you were probably like some sort of sadistic psychopath.
Yeah. Yep. And like nobody You had no guidance whatsoever. There was nobody like there's no adult figure in your life to fucking straighten you out I think it's I don't know if this is in the book.
I'll never know. Yep. I don't read that film But I love that his dad is the police chief and huge piece of shit Right, like it's a nice turn because the early in the movie Um You know, they're about to where they're about to beat up on mic or something Yeah, and they see the cops and they like back off right and you're like Oh, man. This is like it's really given the cops a lot of credit, but yeah, whatever small town stuff Right.
Oh, he's afraid of his piece of shit dad. Right. Oh the cycle of abuse perpetuated down through the generations. That's right.
Got it. Thank you Yeah, so I thought that was a nice touch. It is a nice touch. I liked when his dad Yosemite Sam's at his feet He says dance for me.
Yeah He starts doing like a soft shoe. Yeah. Um, but yeah, I Like the I like that he's a true psycho and the others are just sort of like passive like none of them So clearly none of them like it, but they're also like unfortunately this guy is really cool Yeah, I mean he unfortunately he does have a car and he drives around so yep, that's a lot of currency when you're that age um So these the bullies they uh They're very mean Um, they they pick on Ben and they they grab them they beat him up and then Henry is carving he's gonna carve his name Yeah, all five letters of his name. Fuck man.
That's brutal and harsh It is brutal Uh, so he he carves an h and he's like, you know, he's screaming that he's gonna carve his name and like even his like the bully's friends They're like, uh, Henry once you take it easy. Yeah, like I'm all for being the shit out of this kid But also like we're not trying to kill him. Um, so uh, Ben gets away and like, you know, uh, he uh, he runs through the woods Um, these kids the bullies they chase after him and uh, what's his name? Hold on.
Oh, and tig Um patrick, uh, hockstetter. Yeah, he uh, he goes into the sewers with like A lighter and like hairspray or something like he's gonna set them on top. Um, and he gets he gets caught and he gets Scobbled up by by Pennywise. He sure does Uh, uh, but the kids so uh, are like main characters bill and eddy and Richie and stuff they're in the woods and they actually uh, what's his name?
Ben uh, just sort of like they they run into each other and they're like, fuck we gotta help this kid like he's he's bleeding He's got the shit kicked out of him like so they they take him they rush they go to a drug store and pick up like a bunch of You know bandages and shit like that Beverly. Uh, yes, sorry. Right. No, no while they're there Beverly is also there They run into her and and she's like, you know, I'll help you right because the kids they like they don't want to buy all of it If they buy it then they're gonna get like caught they don't want anybody know when they're buying the shit So Beverly goes and she like flirts with the pharmacist dude wild stuff wild stuff.
Yeah, so she's like She like first off this pharmacist looks like a pharmacist Like I don't know how else to describe this guy But if like you look at him and you're like you just handle prescriptions and give people drugs He's like, uh, I don't know like his I don't know how to describe whatever he wears glasses Beverly goes over and she starts talking to him and she's like you look like Clark Kent with the glasses on And then she's like can I try them on and then she tries them on god He's like you look like Lois Lane and no man He's like and then she's like she's like oh shocks and she goes the hand back knocks like a display off of the Off the counter or whatever and she right she causes distractions What's the silly me right to the kids can like run away and like steal the shit So they're bandaging and bent up in the alleyway there Um, and that's where like Beverly sort of like she doesn't join the group there But that's where like everybody kind of meets right first time. That's like this is like our looser's club, you know, yeah, um, and then there's a that You know, there's a scene where Beverly goes home and you got you get a glimpse into her into her like home life, right? And she lives with her dad now, okay I don't think it's ever explicitly said in this movie, but is there some sort of like sexual abuse I kind of got I felt like that was the subtext just like with all the like like are you still like? Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, the little girl or whatever. That scene like later where he's like touching her hands in like the most upsetting possible way Yeah, I mean like he is like Yeah, the way like he touches her hair. He touches her hand like it never it never like gets explicit Visually like in the movie or whatever, but it does feel heavily implied um So there we get that but then there's like then all the boys they go to like this cliff where there's like a river or lake or something And they're like basically like they're daring each other to like jump off of it They're like who's gonna go first and then Beverly comes up from behind and she's like i'm going first You chickens and she runs right off and jumps and then they they all jump in after and they're playing around and it's it's just all fun and games right now These are the salad days Is this before we have to go fight a demon clown? um Yeah Okay, so one of the things I really like about this story and I think this version of it does a particularly Good job of showcasing it.
Uh, it's sort of like the Like right the Pennywise is refrained is that you know, we all float down here right you'll float too. You'll float too all that good stuff There's a lot of like up down floating Versinking uh, you know like the whole thing is very like you think about Pennywise looks at the bottom of well, right? but even just like Like there's something about them like taking that dive off of a cliff Into the water Just like representing like the normalcy of just like the world like how things are supposed to work before sure before people's blood starts floating Up into the air. It's just like you dive into water.
You're gonna sink you're not supposed to float and just like the I don't know. I think it's just like a very nice emblematic moment of that and things are about something weird Yeah, well, I yeah, I could see what you're saying. I think i'm doing a bad job of saying it, but yeah Well, no, I like the idea that like Well for one. I mean the jumping off the cliff also kind of it solidifies everybody is like This group's friendship right like it is like You know at the end of the movie they form like this blood pact But this is like kind of the first version of that.
Yeah where everybody's like You know without even knowing it themselves. They're like we are we are a group of friends and we are going to be able to like fight this thing. Yeah Yeah, I I kind of see what you're saying also like right the idea that Once uh once you start beating up on Pennywise his blood floats upwards It's yeah, it's terribly and just like the idea that as a group you kind of like You sink you go down but ultimately resurface whereas like these kids who have been you know separated or alienated Yeah, they float. Yeah, they get picked off one by one.
They get siloed off and they float Yeah, the only mic is missing from the scene which I kind of wish Mike was yeah of the uh uh like more of the friend stuff. Yeah, you know, right? This is the scene where they meet up with him right like because he gets chased down to the water and they're there is that right? Well, not I don't think that happens yet.
Yeah, that's like yeah a little bit like down the road there. Um, So so they yeah Like kind of one by one. They're being terrorized by Pennywise. Uh, we see like we were talking about before Eddie Um, he gets like chased down by a leper then he actually sees Pennywise the clown Um, and he says, you know his classic line.
We all float down here. You'll float too. He's got his inverted triangle of balloons Yeah, that's weird. I like it.
I don't know. Yeah, it's good I feel like it only really ever comes back with like the lights in his mouth like the three lights But um, yeah, it's like it's kind of cool. I made sure yeah Um, then we get that scene where it's Beverly in the bathroom where she's like she hears a voice coming from the sink And then she takes like the tape measure to see how like deep it is and what the fuck is going on And then the hair starts like the hair from the sink grabs a hold of her and starts like this part I thought was great She like the the hair like starts wrapping itself around her hands and then her face and then her head And just like pulls her down towards the sink, right? And you think like it almost looks like it's gonna try and pull her into the drain Yes, and then like out of nowhere this geyser of blood just goes off in her face.
Yeah It's I think I think that's the best scare Like all of the individual kids. They're like scary thing that happens to them Oh, yeah, by far It just like I don't know if it's just like the viscerality of like it being hair and blood versus like a lady in a painting or whatever Right, but I also think that like very nicely kind of illustrates the just like the difference in perspective That Beverly has versus the rest of the group where it's like her fears are all very real They're like based on you know like her body and growing up and everyone else is just like what if a creepy kid got me I guess Mike too mike's is very real, but again, you kind of feel it right? It's like right it's burnt body parts Yes, all of these like all of the things that Pennywise is using to terrorize the kids are all like they're all Custom-made for each one so like right like Mike is being like he's being scared by These burnt bodies Eddie gets get scared by the leopard But it's like it's because his mom has made him completely paranoid and like scared of all yeah He's um, he's it's munch housing by proxy, right? That's what that's called.
Yes. Yeah, um And then but like also it's like there's the scene earlier with Beverly and like she she's got she's at the drugstore to get like tampons Yeah, like tampons or like like pads or whatever Um, and and you know then she when she goes home like her father finds You know stops her what's in the bag and then he sees it and then he's like, you know, are you still my little girl? It's it's very creepy. Yep But it's like made it like the fact that she's getting her period now is it's something to make her feel like she should be ashamed or something Right and then like the blood just going off Interface and covering the bathroom right just like every inch of the bathroom is just covered in blood Like that's very specific to what she's going through right now.
Yeah, you know, wait. Did you say the hair thing? Sorry? I was taking a note for myself.
I was just talking about the blood. Okay. Specifically the hair Well, yeah, the hair is like um something what does her dad say exactly that kind of sets her off? It was it was something like uh, he was looking at the the Whatever in the bag and you know, are you still my little girl and whatever?
Yeah, and she has like a she kind of like has just like a breakdown and like cuts all her hair off She's like grossed out. Yeah Like he's everywhere and then yeah, she's like completely creeped out by it So she just cuts off all over hair and then later when the when the after the blood goes off He like comes into the bathroom and he can't see it She and like she's covered head to toe in blood The bathroom is covered and he can't see it at all And the only comment that he makes is like why'd you do this to your hair? You look like a boy And that's she's trying to make herself, you know unattractive to her father, which is just what a bummer It's a real bummer. Yeah, I also liked the sort of like rebonding experience of cleaning the bathroom together Yeah, I really thought that was like so sweet.
I don't know I want 100% agree with that. So like right like the next day or whatever They they all kind of meet up and Beverly's like can I show you something and they go into her house And she like can you see the blood and they're like, yeah, we see it's everywhere And she's like okay, and they're like we can't leave it like this. So right the group collectively just cleans the whole bathroom Yeah, and I was like really struck by Her The way she cleaned the window the shower window. Did you clap that?
No, she's just going like Side to side then down the length of the sponge then back across like very methodically just like wiping it row by row kind of Okay, and I just thought like I thought that was such like a neat little illustration of how at ease She was in this situation with these people that she just felt comfortable like taking her time Working through this problem right now. Well, yes, I think yeah, I mean like yeah, this is like It's kind of like them again all bonding over this thing. They're like, you know, we're friends and we can't we can't just leave you with a bloody bath That's that's crazy There's also like you see that like Ben is kind of he's got a like a crush on Beverly Bill and her have like they were in like some play or something where they kissed like yeah sixth grade Yeah, so they're like, you know talking about that a lot um and then this is the part where where they They find Mike right so After Beverly's house whatever they they take off on their bikes and They find they come across what's the Henry Bowers car and what looks like Mike's right bicycle, right? It's they're both like on the side of the road and they're like fuck like that's a homeschool kids bike like we got to help them So they go down and they find them and uh Henry Bowers is just beating the shit out of him in the river and he's about to like crack him in the head with a rock and Somebody throws a rock at Bowers and then and then Richie just screams rock rock war.
Yeah, it does yell rock war Um, and then the the two sides just start like chucking rocks at each other. Um, this I this kind of it bumped me a little bit. Uh, like the the tonal shift of like it seemed I don't know like I if you take away the music in the scene and it's just like these kids like defending Um, this kid Mike and against these bullies that that to me it makes sense but like Richie yells rock war and then like this like bam I'm saying. Oh, yeah.
Yeah, that's right. I forgot about that Yeah, it just felt like it really felt like it was out of nowhere. Um, like that was the only thing that like really It was like this weird needle drop that bumped me I totally agree and I don't even object to like the rock war thing like I know I don't mind them not fully appreciating the stakes Of what's happening because like at this point in the story. They probably shouldn't right now They're still struggling with the idea of it's summer.
We should be outside or whatever. Well. Yeah, Eddie keeps saying love that Yeah, Eddie's like it's summer. We should be having fun.
Yeah, and then like yeah, like towards the end of whatever bills like if you fucking say that one more time It's funny too because like they're I think they're even a couple adults who say that like the librarian says that to uh, what's his name? Ben to Ben. Yeah. Yeah, he's like it's summer.
Why are you in the library? Yeah, it should be outside kids are supposed to be outside and just like I love this sort of like Yeah, the the just like dumb roteness of that the obliviousness the willful obliviousness of of adults. Yes Yes, okay So yeah, that is that is when they finally meet up with Mike So and so at this point like um they start talking more and Mike has also been experiencing like the weird like uh, you know waking nightmare kind of thing Um, so they know that something is going on and they're like not they just don't they're not exactly sure right and then Um, what's it is this? I think this is the part where they discover that it's every like 27 years Yeah, Ben's like he's like well, I kind of know what's up, right?
Because when we see Ben in the yeah, he is the tenor star when we see Ben in the library That's like yeah, he's looking up the thing that he has a sort of waking nightmare about is this incident that it happened You know, whatever multiple of 27 years earlier where like 88 kids died in a an explosion on Easter sunday For something. I actually really did sort of like the um Him flipping through the pages and then getting to one where you can clearly see the kids head in the tree I because I mean first of all it was a bit spooky I thought the well just like the way it was revealed on screen was uh effective enough But also just like that is the exact kind of thing that you see when you're young that just gets like burned into your brain Yeah, you know, it's just like this. Yeah, like I don't know. I remember being like I wasn't even that much younger but I was like I remember being on the parkway in the passenger seat and this van drove by that was like Full to the top with stuff like in the back like it was like a big van you could see yeah But I like swear to god.
I saw a person like Like dead or something in the back and just like I'm sure that's not what it was but I just like I very vividly remember that Yeah, right. Yeah, it was like a hoarders van and like one of the things that he was hoarding was a pop I can't get rid of this. No, I need this. Yeah, what if I need?
Um, yeah, so they they They figure out that maybe not necessarily that it's this clown or whatever but there there's something fucking that like That in in dairy, um more people die and go missing like it's like six times the national average Um So like something something is wrong in this fucking doubt and like none of the adults There's like this whole thing about like none of the adults giving a shit Um when henry bowers is like carving starting to carve his name and to bend stomach a car drives by with man Yeah grown-ups and they see it nearly see what's happening and they just keep driving driving and then there's like a red balloon in the back seat So you know like yeah Did you like that? I felt like that was a bit much. Yeah, well, I Didn't think the balloon needed to be there. I like the fact that the the adults just drove by us Yeah, because the thing I don't think we've mentioned is that mike is black in main in well.
Yeah. Yeah Well, I was talking about uh Ben getting car. Oh shit. Okay.
All right. Well, he's fat, which is Which is also a problem for a lot of people. Yeah, that's my mention. Okay, but yeah, they do uh No, but you're right like uh having the balloon in the car sort of implies that like pennywise is controlling these people and whatever It's which is like it is kind of the backstory is that like only kids really experience this Uh, you know pennywise and like once these you know, everybody gets older They forget and they you know, they just don't see it anymore Like the fact that all of these kids are going missing in town and like nobody is doing anything right again It's like it's pretty it's not so subtle, but I did really like the detail that um I forget the girls name who goes missing, but her missing flyer just gets papered over with uh patrick hot setter's missing flyer They're like they just so one of the kids even says like it's like she's it's like they forgot about her or something right on to the next missing kid Yes, um, then we get that that scene in the garage where they have the um the projector going Um, yeah, and like pennywise like uh comes out of the the projector screen.
That's a big ass pennywise It's he's very big. It's so big. He's very big. Uh, it's very scary.
Uh, did you think so? Yeah, I thought it was kind of scary. It really caught me off guard the first time I saw it. Yeah That's what I mean like there's some really like creepy shit in this movie Um, then we get the whole scene where they go into like the haunted house or whatever Which like this movie is over two hours long, which it toward I did start feeling like towards the end of that.
All right, let's fucking wrap this up Um So the kids they go into this like the house where they they think that like pennywise sort of like where the well like they know the well is in The right they're like all of the all these sewer systems all these tunnels They sort of like converge in this one spot that's under this house. Um, so they go into the house they get separated They all get their like own personal uh scare treatments. Um, Eddie Eddie breaks his arm And he's any scary thing is that he just gets his fucking arm cracked in half Right does not seem fair. Yeah Uh, there was that when pennywise like comes out of the refrigerator.
Um, he's like all like twisted up and stuff. That's great I like that quite a bit. Yeah, and then there's more drooling Um fucking scars guard just rolling all over the place here. Um, you know what you know what something he does that I do not like I don't feel like it gels with the rest of how he's playing this.
What's that? the sort of like mocking As as they're like as the kids or as his victims are like freaking out They'll sort of like fake cry at them. Yeah, which like I feel like if you're playing this as like an animal that can barely keep You know, basically like edgar in the edgar suit You know the cockroach in the edgar suit like I don't think you I don't think you do that I feel like that's beneath you like if you're like this otherworldly evil Sure, we're not amused by that. Yeah, but you know what?
Also, he's like he is trying to toy with them so that he can make them more Like eat either. Yeah, he's like feeding off of their fear. That's true uh um fucking this pennywise reminds me so much of Johnny Debs mad hatter. Oh, I've never seen that movie.
No, there's no reason to but like uh if you um You know if you get a chance going to youtube, it's like fucking uh It's dumb. It's bad. It's like fucking it's a bad movie. It's it's bad performance.
The whole thing is bad It's kind of kind of ironic that he played the mad hatter But in time we would come to learn that the real mad hatter is that devious scamber heard Right Yeah, right And he's more of the alice in that story and that he took a bunch of pills. Yeah, he's just drinking everything and insight and yeah You know swinging a croquet mallet at whatever Uh, man, okay, so this pennywise reminds you of his mad hatter Yeah, I mean just like in in some of the uh some of the movements and like whatever. I don't know There's just like this rubbery aspect to pull through them. You know, yeah, okay.
Um, there's a rubber To Pennywise, that's kind of how he says it right? Hi, i'm penny I'm penny. I'm denny wise Um, so in this haunted house or whatever bill comes running in with like this like metal iron rod and just jabs it through Pennywise's hen. Yeah, he does look it looks pretty good.
Yeah, his um his like face kind of sliding off his face Yeah, that's real good stuff. Your face is losing your face man Again very edgar esque this is a big bug in a person costume. Yeah, um, yeah, there's that scene where pennywise is like Can I have some sugar water? Oh, yeah, I forgot about that.
Yeah, he loves uh, I mean, you know, I think he was more interested in having like maybe some cotton candy dissolved in water But uh, I mean, you know, he wanted that sugar water. Can we go to the globe statue in queens? Yeah, we could go there pennywise. Okay.
Thanks. Okay. Oh, yes Yeah, your your skin's hanging off your bones Uh one of the those two each deserved an Oscar for that scene best supporting actor so good Um, yeah, so get edgar on the show We should that be a real treat. Yeah, probably probably not in the same episode that absolutely not no We can't have them in the same.
No, we may even put edgar behind the paywall Yeah Edgar tells all about sugar water. Yeah, yeah exclusive interview Edgar tells all behind the paywall. Oh wow. Yeah, uh, so then so we get um, so the kids they they get out of there and they're like fucking terrified Rightfully so um and eddie's mom is uh, she's so mad that he broke his arm And she's like, uh, you know, she's like you can't hang out with these kids anymore And she like calls them all like rotten calls them monsters.
Very very Of being a you know, uh, hussy um So then then there's like a this montage of like all the kids being like split up They fight like bill punches richy They they they have to like this fight or whatever and everybody kind of goes their separate ways and they're like, yeah, we're I guess We're done with all that like fighting pennywise business, right? Yeah. Yeah, I think um right ben even is like He's like he's like next time this comes up. I'm gonna be 40 and far away from here So fuck it.
I'm just gonna lay low for the rest of the summer. Yeah, yeah Um Then we get that scene of henry bowers like shooting the gun and he's like Uh, he's like, you know put that cat up there. He wants to shoot the cat He's just like a real sick fuck. Yeah, and it's uh what's his name?
Belch squelch. Yeah, belch belch belch huggens. He's just kind of like man. You're such a fucking asshole But it's still just like all right.
All right, man Yeah, and the fact the idea that he's gonna sharpshoot the cat while his well belch is large friend is holding it. Yeah, yeah Oh my god And then his dad comes home and that's when he your somebody slams him shoots at his feet And it's like any he says something crazy line. He's like see how easily a paperman crumbles Or something. Yeah, like you know how you talk about your son.
Yeah a little a little fear in paperman Crumb something like that. See that boys because all his uh his lackeys belch. Yeah, yeah, among them of course Yeah, henry is completely humiliated and he's terrified of his father um But then he gets there's a red balloon hanging out of his uh mailbox and he opens it up There's this box and it's the knife that he was using a carve up henry with ben stomach Yeah, because uh ben escaped by sort of like tumbling down a hill and that's like that was like on the side of the road And all the bullies went after him and in the in the fray henry had lost the knife Right and he said my dad's gonna kill me if uh, you know, I lose this knife whatever Ah how ironic. Yeah Henry goes into the house and his dad is asleep and he it's like um, it's like a retractable knife uh, so he he it's retracted and He sticks it up to his father's neck.
Yes, and then he just like he just extends. Yeah, he does a cattle prod Yeah, basically not how proud though, you know the puncher whatever that's called right It's just like he stabs his father. Yeah, I'm fucking then and the leading up to it the tv gets all pennywise now It's like it's like a kid show. It's like a woman like I don't know what reading a book to a bunch of kids or something And then she's like kill should kill yeah, hey kill your dad henry and they're all like kill your dad henry Yeah, I suppose you do it.
Yeah Um No, what do you make of it? What do you think of that? Pennywise electing this boy as his uh his sentinel his sentinel on earth. Yeah Um He's introducing some more chaos more like uh I don't remember it so much in the the original the miniseries.
Um, I just remember the kids hair going white. Yes Um That's the kid who gets sucked into the pipe, right? Yes. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, does he kill his dad in that one? I don't think so either. It's kind of an interesting interesting addition.
I also think it's interesting that he kind of looks like Bill Scarsgard in the straw It's the um, it's the pennywise uh, what do you call it like the phenotype or whatever? Yeah Um There then we get a scene of like Beverly Um, it's like the scene we were talking about before where her dad is like grabbing her hand and she he's like a You're still my little girl and she says no And he gets pissed and then she like she fights back she kicks him in the face and runs off Locks herself in the bathroom and when he breaks into the bathroom and she cracks him in the head with the toilet seat lid Very or the toilet lid. Yeah. Um, and I mean like fucking knocks the shit.
Oh, yeah, knocks him out um, full of blood. I like that in you know, like immediately following the other dad murder scene Where it's like the it's sort of like very plainly like it's not inherently immoral to kill your dad Like motive matters a great deal. Yes That's very like um like greek mythology. It is uh, but then uh, pennywise is there and he You know, kid naps are abducts or whatever Um, bill goes to the house sees that, you know her dad is knocked out on the bathroom floor and that she's missing Um, and so he rounds up all the all the kids And they're like we have to go get her so they go to the house the spooky house again Uh, they find the well in the basement they climb down Um, and just then they're like all the kids are down there except for mike mike's about to climb down and henry bowers Uh gets there and starts wailing on mike and mike has the the bolt gun and Henry bowers gets gets his hands on it and he holds it up to mike's head.
Jesus dude This is very scary. I hate yeah, it's really fucked up and it looks like he's you know Like I didn't think that he was actually going to do it, but it really looked like it for a minute No, and then he pulls the trigger He does mike like ducks out of the way at just the right moment right and clovers him in the head with a rock Yes, I mean bowers has gotten a lot of rocks to the dome And then one final rock the rock at the very bottom Yeah, bottom well as well, um, yeah, so mike pushes him down the well and Oh, it looks like it goes on for fucking. Yeah It's very deep. We don't even we don't see him for the rest of the movie He's out right because like the you know, they're like repelling into the well And the pennywise tunnel is only like part of the way down Right, so they like sort of see him tumble past them and then just like keep going.
There's no like curse flat There's nothing. He's just gone into the pit. Yes again very poetic Um, then we got that senior talking about the four where Stanley gets attacked by that That ghost lady. Yeah, it's like a what is it?
It's a painting at his temple. Yes Um, yeah, because he's like studying he's studying for the Torah which Nura really came up again and he's bad at it Well, there's when when all the kids go there are separate ways you do see like there's like a two second clip of him at his mornin Oh, okay But yeah, so they um they find So this this woman from the painting or whatever she's it's Pennywise. She's got the teeth or whatever and if the kids find Stanley like laid out on the ground and like this demon or whatever Her mouth is completely around like his face like around the side of his face So and they like scare it off and he's got like it's got a fucking bite mark like teeth works in his fucking face Um, and that's the part you were saying like really kids like freaking out like why'd you leave me? You left me.
I was alone and blah blah blah um it's very sad and then yeah, and then uh bill bill sees georgie And he goes running off search and form and then the kids follow and they get to like Pennywise's It's layer like his main layer and you look up and they're all these kids floating in the air What do you think about that? I liked it. You like it more than like because they're just like webbed up right in the original In the yeah in the original I think they're just webbed up you prefer floating to webbing Yeah, I mean like I thought the whole spider thing there wasn't they did allude to the spider thing in this movie Yeah, you do see his big legs his big spider legs Yeah, there's there's also seen uh the scene early on with mike where he's delivering that food And like the the burnt hands are coming out like that door swings open and it's like it's behind this like clear plastic So it's not like very clear But you can see Pennywise like his upper torso It's like up in the air and it's higher. Oh, I didn't even notice that And then and it looks like there's some like leg stuff like actually on yeah Yeah, and then like and then it cuts to mike and then cuts back and then Pennywise is he gets he gets a shit together.
Yeah. Yeah Interesting. I didn't even catch that. Yeah, I I like the the floating thing Did you not like it?
I am not in mind again my if we're talking death of subtext here like everything Becomes very literal. Yeah, we all float down. We know take a look. We're all floating Not really and you know we didn't even talk about I mean this episode this is a dozer, huh?
but um The we didn't even talk about the most iconic shot in this whole movie which is when Beverly gets taken down there you know and she comes to and the His like little his like lair within his layers is like a circus wagon Falls open and it's just like this portal into hell and he starts doing a little jig And I don't know what the effect is called but the camera angle is like locked with his head So that like whatever way his head moves the camera swings with it So the head looks stationary. It's almost like when you move a chicken's body or whatever and since they still yeah It's like that but he's just doing the psycho jig and the camera is kind of like shaking and swaying Yeah, I mean, right. I'm sure most people have seen this the dance already But I would I would say it's like a like a like a like a a gold miner Yeah, like steamboat willy kind of yeah, yeah, just like yeah swinging his arms side is It is a gold miner dance. It's perfect Um, like an old prospect or just fucking and the look on his face is like deathly serious Yeah, yeah, like and like and like the sound again the sound is not too You just hear his like boots like slapping of the board I actually think like for as silly as that is it is like very strange and the fact that it takes up the whole frame the way it does Yeah, it's very I mean, there's a reason it's like the thing that sticks out never wanted about this movie.
It's very memorable Yeah, it's a lot of it's weird. Yeah, it's it's a bit of business. It's jarring. It's unsettling.
I quite like it Um, so they they they they find Beverly. She's floating in the air. Uh, the grabber they pull her down Um, and they're trying to like wake her up and then Ben kisses her and that's when she wakes up. Yeah, uh, And uh She kind of looks at him and like Ben had written this poem Yes earlier in the movie on a postcard that he intended to like give to her and it was just signed like your secret admire or whatever Right and she finds it in um Bills like she thinks bill wrote it or whatever and realizes in this moment Then he wrote it and like quotes it back to him and he quotes it back.
It's very sweet. That's a very sweet moment Um, and so uh bill is talking to georgie and georgie's like I just want to go home And like I missed everybody and I just I want to be home with everybody. Oh, this is ice cold. It's ice cold I love it And bill is like I know georgie.
I want that more than anything But you're not georgie and he takes the fucking bolt gun and just fucking don't use him Yeah, right between the fucking eyes It's just fucking ice cold and like and it's so good because like you know as an audience number You're like I know georgie is dead, but this kid is like being pretty convincing right now And like and there's like I don't know there's probably like 10 or 15 seconds after he gets the bolt gun to the head Where nothing happens where nothing happens and you're like wait did he just actually Yeah, wait. Oh no georgie Hi georgie And yeah, it's I mean and then and then you know he's the body starts shaking and then Pennywise It's Pennywise. He's just he's up to his transt. All right.
You got me. I'm Pennywise What do you think would you think of that transformation because that also felt like because there's some like Some cartoonishness to it. Yes. I thought it was kind of loony tunes because like georgie small body or whatever, right?
So like the arms and stuff like they pro-tracked out of the torso. Yeah, yeah, they're they're almost like inflating They would like kick out and get big that and then the first thing that happens with the transformation Is that two little red poofs appear on his shoes? They just like cut up like into existence. Yeah, I was like that's like very Very cartoonish and I don't feel like you I guess you kind of get that with Pennywise, right up to that point Like the him twisting out of the refrigerator is a little little cartoony It's yeah, it's car to I mean like all the balloons and stuff.
He's like he is a clown after all he it Yeah, I mean I get he is very much a clown. That's his whole she's a dancing clown Yeah, he dances up. We have seen him dance It's funny that he promises the dance in the first scene and a payoff for that is absolutely It's worth it. It's so worth it.
You get what you paid for in the best way Um, so the kids start just wailing on Pennywise here Uh, but then it Pennywise gets a hold of um bill. Yeah, right and he's like I'll you know, I'll make a deal with you you leave me you leave bill here and you walk away And I'll I'll go back to sleep for another 27 years and you guys won't even you'll never see me again You live happy lives whatever But he keeps going because he's like you live you live happy lives and you'll get older and older until the until the weeds take you back Or what was that line? Yes, it was it was something and it's like I mean I found that very effective because it's just like Pennywise almost looking down the barrel of the camera like Making the idea of living like a quiet contented life seeming seem incredibly menacing Yeah, and that's that's very upsetting like I don't know that that really worked for me that moment Yeah, and then so Richie stands up and uh Yeah, Richie and Bill will have you know, they had the fight earlier So you're like, I don't know exactly where this is gonna go And Richie's like you hit me in the face. You drag me down here.
You almost got me killed And now I got now we got to kill this fucking clown Which you know, yeah, it's whatever. I I liked it well enough I like that he's you just sort of like picks up the bad. He's like sizing it up as he says it a little bit That was kind of funny. Yeah, I don't love a line like that Especially in a movie like that's like an action movie B.
It is an action movie line And I don't know it was it was fine. It's a funny line. I got it's a fucking club with a baseball Yeah, it's it's whatever. It's all right.
Um And then so they start wailing on the thing again And then it and you know, he Like depending on why it's kind of like realizes that he's he's been beaten right now And he he just falls back into Like a deeper well and he's just like and and that's it. That's like You know, he's they think that he you know, they beat him like his head crumbles and he just falls So they're like we I think we did it Um and then they they form a blood oath where they cut their hands and they they they have a Reform circle and they say, you know, if he ever comes back we promise to to come back here and fly on And that's pretty much it. Uh, yeah Um Bill kisses bev and then it's role credits. Yeah, that's it.
That's it shows over Shows just kidding Uh, but the movie is over. Um, which means that we can get to our segments Oh, that hurts my parts. This is of course. Oh, that hurts my parts.
Um, there's some literal parts hurting throughout Oh, sure. All the bad guys get their parts hurt in this movie Yeah, right They do Henry Henry gets his parts hurt Um, yeah, that's his part parts gets his parts decimated frankly. Yes Um, Dan what hurt your parts the most about this movie Good question. I'm you do you want me to go first?
Yeah, if you got some locked and loaded I could use a second Yeah, I did really enjoy this movie. So it is kind of it's almost like kind of nitpicking Um There was like kind of two things it yeah, but essentially the same thing It was like it was the sound design sound design really Off in several parts where like the scary moments every time that they were supposed to be a scare It was like this loud fucking crashing like noise right and like I saw this in the movie theater and I get that you're trying to scare people but it's I don't know I feel like that's a cheap way to do it. It's like a jump scare without um, but you don't eat it like you know jump scares And then the whole the music at the rock war scene. I thought was totally off from the rest of the yeah That that was psychotic that made absolutely no sense.
I wonder if the jump scare stuff like you think it's gonna Keep up at the same like do you think the tone how much do you think the tone is gonna change from one to two? I have no right because like yeah for me. I feel like the the jump scare sound design stuff like I agree It was super distracting. It felt it felt cheap um I wonder if like I think it would be cool if part two were a A bit more like tonal and less dependent on jump scares like what scares you as a kid versus what scares you as an adult kind of thing Totally.
That would be great. I don't know if we can expect that same director or same writer. So like yeah, we'll see But um Yeah, what hurt my parts dude. I don't know I mean you could say the sound design too.
